Yakuza Kiwami is an action-packed open-world RPG. Play as one of the most feared and respected mobsters as you fall from power and must reclaim your legacy. This game is filled with everything you could possibly want to do in Japan from trying the food, playing some billiards, karaoke, and beating up almost every person that talks to you. Yakuza Kiwami’s great story, combat, and atmosphere made it one of my new favorites.
Yakuza’s story is extremely engaging. The cut scenes are cinematic and make the game and world feel grand. It feels like an anime come to life. Every character feels unique and you get to play as the coolest dude alive. The main story is a blast and once started it is difficult to stop. The side missions are interesting but are less engaging and more frustrating. They are fun and ridiculous but after a while time, I missed the TV like drama of the main story.
The progression system in the game is dense and has four tiers. Each tier is unlocked with XP that is gained through combat and missions. Getting XP is balanced and I never felt like I was behind my opponents but rather was unlocking things to make myself even cooler. The progression system also allows you to pick and choose what is important to you so that you are fighting and playing in the style that you enjoy the most.
The game’s combat is so much fun. You start with four different styles, brawler, rush, beast, and dragon. Each one feels unique and extremely powerful with the exception of dragon. Dragon tyle must be learned so it takes a long time before if feel as badass as all the others. The inputs are all very responsive and players develop their own way of fighting different kinds of foes. Fights, especially those in the story, feel well balanced and do require skill. I could spend hours just messing with the combat in this game.
The best part of this game is the atmosphere. It feels like you are in a Japanese city. The detail is staggering and I found myself trying to enter buildings that were not part of the game. All the shops have their own street signs, pedestrians, and music. The music is what makes this game epically enthralling. The music during fights, at the stores, and walking down the streets are all different but come together to make the perfect setting.
This game is a blast! Some of the tasks can get repetitive and feel unnecessary but all the frustration melts away when you start beating people with a traffic cone. This game is great and I cannot wait to play more.
