A fantastic film with one of the most heartfelt stories of friendship that has been released in recent memory. Project Hail Mary is out now to watch digitally, but if you want to see it the best way possible, wait just a few short days for 8/11 with the physical 4k release. You won't be disappointed.
“Science teacher Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling) wakes up on a spaceship light-years from home with no recollection of who he is or how he got there. As his memory returns, he begins to uncover his mission: solve the riddle of the mysterious substance causing the sun to die out. He must call on his scientific knowledge and unorthodox ideas to save everything on Earth from extinction…but an unexpected friendship means he may not have to do it alone.”
Based on Andy Weir’s acclaimed 2021 novel, Project Hail Mary stands as one of the best films of the year. Weir, the author behind the massive success of The Martian (adapted into Ridley Scott’s 2015 hit starring Matt Damon), has carved out a distinctive niche in smart, accessible hard science fiction. His stories blend rigorous scientific problem-solving with humor, isolation, and unexpected human and non-human connection. The Martian proved audiences would embrace dense science when it was delivered with wit and heart; Project Hail Mary builds on that foundation and expands it into something even more ambitious and emotionally resonant. Screenwriter Drew Goddard, who also adapted The Martian, returns here, with directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller bringing their sharp comedic timing and visual inventiveness to the material.
The film is long, yet the pacing never falters. It balances high-stakes scientific problems, a non-linear story, and character-driven moments in a way that satisfies die-hard sci-fi fans, real science enthusiasts, and general audiences alike. The story trusts viewers to follow complex ideas without dumbing them down, while never losing the emotional core that makes the journey matter.
Ryan Gosling carries the vast majority of the film with a performance of remarkable range and presence. As Ryland Grace, he is confused, brilliant, vulnerable, determined, and deeply human. Much of the movie rests on his shoulders alone, and he delivers with quiet intensity and charm that anchors every sequence.
The true soul of the story, however, is the relationship between Grace and Rocky, the alien creature he encounters. Rocky was brought to life primarily through sophisticated practical puppetry and animatronics overseen by creature designer Neal Scanlan, with performer and voice actor James Ortiz leading a team of puppeteers. The choice of a physical presence on set rather than pure CGI gave Gosling a tangible scene partner to react to, resulting in chemistry that feels authentic and profoundly moving. Their evolving partnership built through scientific collaboration, mutual respect, and growing friendship across species, is the emotional heart of the film and one of its greatest achievements. While I’ve been holding my breath since mega-company Amazon bought MGM, this film gives me hope that despite all the soulless and money-driven decisions the company will continue to make, there will be gems like this that will shine through.

The 4K Ultra HD presentation is outstanding, with native 4K resolution, Dolby Vision, and HDR10. The vastness of space, the detailed interiors of the Hail Mary, and the intricate design of Rocky all benefit from exceptional clarity, contrast, and color. The film’s shifting aspect ratios (including IMAX-enhanced sequences) are preserved cleanly. After seeing this both streaming and on physical now, this should be clear evidence of the benefit of a physical disc over streaming.
Audio
The Dolby Atmos track is immersive and dynamic. Dialogue is clear and concise, while the score and environmental effects place the viewer firmly aboard the ship. Also comparing streaming versus physical, sound feels much fuller given the absence of compression for streaming purposes.
Special Features
Despite the 8/11 release on 4k and Blu-ray, an Amazon exclusive Steelbook edition is going to be release in October with some additional collectible material. This edition comes with a slip cover, but no digital code, because obviously Amazon wants you to stream anything from them and hopefully buy something along the way.

Project Hail Mary on 4K is a fantastic film: intelligent, heartfelt, and thoroughly entertaining. It honors Andy Weir’s story while delivering a deeply human story carried by outstanding performances and one of the most memorable alien characters in recent cinema. If you haven’t seen the film yet, see it on a physical disc. This comes out 8/11.
