Marshals: Season 1

Marshals: Season 1
Marshals: Season 1

The continuing saga of Kayce Dutton doesn't quite reach the dramatic depth as the best moments of Yellowstone, but it is a competent beginning to a television show that could turn into something solid given enough time. For fans of the Yellowstone universe, this is right up your alley, and comes out 8/25/26.

“With the Yellowstone Ranch behind him, Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) joins an elite unit of U.S. Marshals in Montana. Combining his skills as a cowboy and Navy SEAL to bring range justice to Montana, he and his teammates must balance family, duty and the high psychological cost that comes with serving as the last line of defense in the region’s war on violence.”

Yellowstone, created by Taylor Sheridan, became a cultural phenomenon after premiering in 2018. The neo-Western drama followed the Dutton family as they fought to protect their sprawling Montana ranch against developers, politicians, and internal strife across five seasons. Its blend of family power struggles, land conflicts, and authenticity ensured a rapid following that expanded the franchise.

Kayce Dutton the youngest son of John Dutton, has always occupied a complicated place within that story. A former Navy SEAL who returned home carrying trauma, he spent much of the original series torn between loyalty to the ranch, his Native American wife Monica, and their son Tate. By the end of Yellowstone, major losses and shifting family dynamics leave Kayce seeking a different path. Marshals picks up after those events, sending him into federal law enforcement as a U.S. Marshal. The series explores his attempt at a fresh start, stepping away from ranch life while still operating in the same Montana landscape, now focused on high-stakes cases that test his skills and sense of justice.

The ‘Yellowstone universe’ has expanded rapidly under Paramount. Prequels 1883 and 1923 deepened the historical roots of the Dutton family and the land itself, while additional spin-offs like Dutton Ranch have continued the journey of other characters on the show. The result is an ambitious shared world of interconnected stories, though the quality has been hit or miss, much like the original show, some trying to capture the original’s dramatic weight and character depth, while others lean more heavily into formula or spectacle.

Marshals itself leans into a more procedural structure. Episodes often revolve around self-contained cases involving threats to the region, with Kayce and his team. There are interwoven stories that stretch throughout the first season, but these smaller self-contained cases provide a lot of the action, especially for the new cast of characters. The one positive about the show is returning characters Gil Birmingham’s Thomas Rainwater and Mo Brings Plenty. They serve to deepen the duality that Kayce faced before, and also explore some very harsh and true hardships that Native Americans continue to face to this day.

The show provides solid moments of tension, decent performances from the new cast, although these can feel a bit over-dramatic. This series rarely reaches the layered family drama, moral complexity, or sustained intensity that defined the best moments of the original Yellowstone.

Overall, as one who adored the first season of Yellowstone and saw it slowly decline in quality from that point on, I was skeptical I would enjoy this at all. However, there are some genuinely good moments in this show. There are quite a few bad moments too, but I actually found enjoyment while diving in to the 13-episode series.

Marshals: Season 1 on Blu-ray offers a competent, action-oriented entry in the expanding Yellowstone universe. It gives the Kayce Dutton character a new chapter and delivers enough solid procedural moments to satisfy fans looking for more time with the character, even if it lacks the richer storylines and writing of the original series. The second season premiers in October, so now is the chance to get caught up to see what happens in the next chapter of Kayce Dutton. This set will be released 8/25.
