1923: Season Two

1923 is a clear, concise and entertaining saga from start to finish. It's a story that doesn't get bogged down in superfluous details in trying to cater to a certain audience, which Yellowstone is sometimes guilty of doing. Of the entire "Yellowstone Universe", this one gets it right, and only seeks to tell a small story in the lives of these characters, nothing more. It's available to own now on Blu-ray and DVD.

“A cruel winter brings new challenges and unfinished business to Jacon (Harrison Ford) and Cara (Hellen Mirren) back at Dutton Ranch. With harsh conditions and adversaries threatening to end the Dutton legacy, Spencer (Brandon Sklenar) embarks on an arduous journey home, racing against time to save his family in Montana. Meanwhile, Alexandra (Julia Schlaepfer) sets off on her own harrowing trans-Atlantic journey to find Spencer and reclaim their love. Includes over two hours of special features, with two bonus featurettes highlighting heartwarming cast and crew interviews, stunning behind-the-scenes footage, and the sets, costumes, and props that authentically bring 1923 to life.”

Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone universe has grown into something bigger than most of us could have predicted. While its premier television show on Paramount has made for some entertaining television, the prequel shows, 1923 specifically, have quickly become what I look forward to more so than Yellowstone. 1923 is a sprawling, richly detailed look at the Dutton family during one of the most turbulent times in American history. With Season 2 now on Blu-ray, fans can revisit the saga in the best quality possible, complete with strong performances and riveting storytelling.

Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren give commanding performances as always. As Jacob and Cara Dutton, they bring weight, gravitas, and raw humanity to every scene. Ford gives us a Jacob hardened by decades of responsibility, but never fully hardened against loss. Mirren is the backbone of the series, every bit as fierce and commanding as her male counterparts, carrying herself with a strength that resonates through the family.

But if there’s one breakout performance, it’s Brandon Sklenar as Spencer Dutton. From the very beginning, Sklenar has been one of the most magnetic parts of the show, and Season 2 only solidifies that. His journey, torn between war, love, and his family obligations back home, feels like the emotional core of the series. Few actors can balance stoicism with vulnerability so seamlessly, and his presence elevates the entire ensemble.

On the other side of the story, Timothy Dalton gives another mesmerizing performance as Donald Whitfield with a villainy that’s both charming and utterly despicable. He’s the perfect antagonist: cunning, ruthless, and yet human enough to make you almost sympathize with him before he twists the knife again. Every time he’s on screen, the tension spikes.

What I enjoyed more about this series than Yellowstone is the flawless storytelling of several different journeys, with some characters who never even meet one another. Fantastic writing, character development, and world building continues in this second season, unrestrained from the ‘hook’ that each season of Yellowstone seems to try, sometimes more focused on turning sequences into a country western music video than developing story and characters.

Video

1923: Season 2 is presented in 1080p High Definition Widescreen. Paramount’s Blu-ray transfer looks excellent, with stunning Montana landscapes rendered in rich color and detail. Shadow detail holds up well in darker interior sequences, while daylight exteriors are gorgeous, capturing the natural beauty that’s become a Sheridan trademark.

Audio

The DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track is strong, balancing dialogue with the environmental soundscape. Horses, wind, and gunfire ring out across the surrounds, while the center channel keeps voices clear even in chaotic sequences. Bass presence is solid in action moments, though don’t expect Atmos-level immersion. For Blu-ray, it’s still an impressive mix that complements the storytelling.

1923: Season 2 continues to cement itself as one of the best shows in the Yellowstone universe. Anchored by legends Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren, elevated by Brandon Sklenar’s magnetic turn as Spencer, and challenged by Timothy Dalton’s calculating villainy, this is prestige television with real staying power. The Blu-ray set presents the series with strong video and audio, along with extras that enhance the experience.

If you’ve followed the Duttons this far, the Blu-ray release of 1923: Season 2 is essential viewing: a story of family, survival, and legacy that will stick with you after the series finale.
