It’s 2018, surely you have played Limbo by now! If not, it has been ported to the Nintendo Switch and you can play it anywhere!
Limbo is a poignant experience where zero exposition is given to you, which leaves the narrative to your imagination! Of course, there is plenty of speculation online, but I encourage you to form your own opinion before seeking out the crazy fan theories that exist! And they are all as dark as the games art.
The first thing you’ll notice is that Limbo is unforgiving. It’s not necessarily hard, but it’s designed that if you were rushing through, just holding down right on the thumb stick, or jumping immediately on the first rope you see, YOU WILL DIE. Even when you think you have fully examined the surroundings, and you think you know what traps are there to get you, another one is there. It’s this fear that makes you ok with dying, you have to be, because you will die, A LOT. But each time you learn a little more to get past one more piece of the puzzle, until you reach the end. I got to the point where I thought each new death was hilarious. The developers really put in extra work to make sure each jump to safety would end in a bear trap to the legs, with a nice long fade to help you reflect on your misplaced confidence.
Every stage adds a new element of gameplay that keeps it entertaining just long enough before another element is added. This keeps the game flowing so that you are always learning something new or figuring out how to use the same mechanics in different ways before it moves on the next thing. This type of flow is how you end up starting Limbo “to play for a little bit” and end up running through the whole game in one sitting. It sucks you in and won’t let go until the bitter end.
Limbo is a classic, it’s definitely on the list of top indie games of all time, and you should 100% pick it up for the Switch. It may be a short run through but it will definitely be one that sticks with you.
