Far Cry 5 is introducing “Far Cry Arcade”, a sort-of replacement for the map editors of previous Far Cry entries. With my time at the recent Far Cry 5 preview event, I was able to sit down and play about 15-30 minutes of some pre-made arcade mode maps. And really, I’m not too sure my time playing the mode really gives the mode justice, as there is a ton to do within the mode.
Giving players literally whatever they want to create maps and new sorts of games has always been enticing, and the Arcade Mode in Far Cry 5 turns it up a notch. Not only are you able to use Far Cry 5 assets, but players are actually able to use assets from several Ubisoft IPs, including previous Far Cry games, Watch Dogs, and even Assassin’s Creed. The possibilities are pretty crazy when you think about it, as evidenced in other games having similar modes. When I get my hands on the full entry, you better believe I’m going to attempt to recreate some of my favorite missions from other games in Far Cry 5’s Arcade Mode.
One really enticing feature is the ability to also create PVP modes. I was able to play several minutes of a 6v6 deathmatch mode, and it was pretty cool. Wild animals randomly attacked players while they were trying to take out other players, and the whole thing was very chaotic. I’m not entirely sure how matchmaking will go when trying to find games for your own personally created map, so we’ll have to see how that goes when the game fully releases.
The two solo missions I played though were very interesting. One was a sort of puzzle mission, with some heavy horror inspirations throughout. Lots of goats, lots of dark red corners. This map in particular was interesting, if not a little too easy to navigate through. But you can definitely see some of the possibilities players will have at their disposal, as the map definitely turned in very odd directions and at one point I couldn’t tell if I was ascending through the map, or descending. Maddening, indeed.
The second solo mission consisted a generic “shoot-em-up” mission that allowed players to choose whether they went in guns-blazing, or started off the map with only a knife. Again, like the first solo mission, you can definitely see the possibilities of what Arcade Mode has to offer.
I, for one, can’t wait to see some of the creations players come up with when they get their hands on the game. And I’m hopeful (yet skeptical) that Blood Dragon’s dinosaurs will be in the game so I can recreate some missions based around Jurassic Park. But other than that, Arcade Mode is shaping up to be a very cool addition to Far Cry 5. Of course, be on the lookout for our full review, and how Arcade Mode shapes up, later on this month!
