TV shows based off of the DC Universe continue to do well for themselves. Recently, the second season of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow hit the home release on Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital, with all seventeen episodes and a handful of bonus features. I actually had never seen this show before and have not yet finished season two, but I have enjoyed what I have seen so far. Unfortunately, without the luxury of having viewed season one, I entered this second season a little lost. From what I have read though, some character changes and a lighter tone make season two an improvement.
The main story in season two is the hunt for the Spear of Destiny, and the fight to keep it out of the Legion of Doom’s hands. Many other character and smaller plot developments take place as well naturally, and the sheer number of characters, not to mention the crossover with The Flash, Arrow, and Supergirl, give a lot of story arcs to cover. From The Atom, Captain Cold (played by Prison Break star Wentworth Miller) to Heave Wave, Rip Hunter, Reverse Flash, Firestorm, there’s a host of colorful, historical, and fresh characters to take an interest in.
I won’t go into detail about the show itself with plenty of other sites able to cover the episode synopsis’ better than I, but I can speak to the quality of this release from Warner. Expect a very crisp and vibrant 1080p picture that impressively displays the show’s special effects and sci-fi nature. I can’t really complain about the video quality at all, it’s excellent. Similarly, the audio provides a DTS-HD MA 5.1 track for those with the hardware to support it, and the mix between music, effects, and dialog is balanced very nicely. Plenty of subtitle options are also included.
Extra features are one of the most important elements to a home release, and WB does a pretty solid job here. Comic Con has become such a big event that it’s little surprise that one of the features, lasting thirty minutes, is the 2016 San Diego Comic Con panel the cast and crew participated in. A gag-reel running about six and a half minutes is included, nine deleted scenes. “Allied: The Invasion! Complex” is another HD feature, running ten minutes, that includes some of the writers discussing the crossover with other DC shows (Arrow, Flash, and Supergirl).
DC Legends Season Two on Blu-ray is a no-nonsense, straight-forward release. It’s well packaged on three BD’s, includes the complete season on digital, does an excellent job with the video and sound, and has a few worthwhile extra features.
