Real life is usually messier and less exciting than fiction, and this portrait of the famous Duchess of Devonshire supports that theory. Beautiful in many ways, The Duchess is an interesting, but not riveting, historical drama.

The Washington Post called this film “eternally funny but subtly touching.” Frankly, I’m not sure what they were thinking. Obscene, distasteful, asinine and hilarious, sure, but touching? Don’t expect any hanky moments here!
