I'm a huge Woody Allen fan, but lately his work has been a little less than exciting. Some of it has become a bit repetitive (see Whatever Works for details) and mostly lackluster in conclusions. So when You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger hit our mailbox there was still room to be excited that he could work his way through whatever he is going through (if anything at all). Let's see how it turned ...[Read More]
Thelma & Louise is still considered a classic. Outside of the 'strong women' connotation that's strung throughout the entire film, most people enjoy it for one reason... (and no, Steve Schardein, it's not Brad Pitt -- that's your reason) ...for the ending
Life As We Know It is a simple romantic comedy about a very complicated issue; raising a child. To throw an even more complicated wrench into the equation it's doubly hard raising a child who isn't even yours. Come see how the parents did...
Part action, part love story, part historical fiction, all awesome! This Blu-Ray release by MGM of the 1990 Academy Award Winner for Best Picture and Best Director stars Kevin Costner and Mary McDonnell and is directed by Costner. And although the 55 additional minutes make this movie an all afternoon/evening endeavor, the amazing special features and incredible HD transfer make this epic well w...[Read More]
Keep your friends close, and your family closer. This Australian independent release from Sony Pictures Classics by rookie writer/director David Michod stars Guy Pearce and a host of relatively unknowns for an American audience. But everyone pitches in to make this first time effort pretty solid, although the narrative could use some work.
"You talking to me?... You talking to me!?" Wait, wrong film, but still a classic.
Gun was written by and stars Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson, a famous rap artist. The film co-stars Val Kilmer and was directed by Jessy Terrero. Image Entertainment released Gun on Blu-ray earlier this month. The movie itself isn't terrible, and the presentation quality is on par, but a complete lack of extra features does not help the overall value of this release.
The latest in Robert Rodriguez's darker style of movies delivers with gallons blood, gore and enough action to keep even the most demented person happy.
You can't go wrong with a Paul Rudd/Steve Carell comedy, right?
Zack Snyder has made a name for himself when it comes to pulling people/dialogue off pages and into some sort of 'more-real-than-life' films. He did a masterful job with Watchmen, which he didn't get enough credit for. He also put together a wonderful film adaption of 300 that gives me hope that he can possibly help out in some way with Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns. Anyway, to the point....[Read More]
The Town has been talked about this Fall as if it already won an Academy Award for best picture; maybe rightfully so that it should. Written and directed by Ben Affleck, The Town is an intelligent drama about social classes and how some things cannot change, no matter what people do.
When you think of the old west, especially western films, you can't help but think of John Wayne. The Duke was bigger than life and no one has had a film career quite like him. He starred in dozens of classic films, and one of those just came out on Blu-ray today thanks to Paramount. In 1969's True Grit, Wayne reprises his role as Rooster Cogburn, the tough as nails marshall who always gets the jo...[Read More]
