Beowulf: Director’s Cut

Blood, Brutal, Broken...Beowulf.Naked of niceness, brutal to the boneIf you haven't read Beowulf or hadn't seen the movie, you're in for quite a ride.  I read this when I was a wee-lad.  It was incredibly manly and contained just enough morals to slip by our local North Carolina school board.  When Robert Zemeckis decided to make an animated film version of it, I could only imagine the likeness of...[Read More]

Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle: Unrated Edition

I swore that I would never see this film. Ever, ever, ever, ever, ever. It never looked interesting, funny or intriguing. Having seen it I can certainly say now, without a doubt… I was wrong. Lighting up the screen If you don’t know the basic premise behind Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle it is quite simple. Harold and Kumar are best friends and roommates. Harold is an up and comin...[Read More]

The Lost Boys

So many wonderful things happened in 1987. The rejuvenation of the videogame industry. The pseudo-war with Russia was coming to an end. Joel Schumacher created The Lost Boys. The last item, of course, is the most important here. A new take on an old concept Teen movies were a dime a dozen. Each decade goes through that period where it’s absolutely cool for a bunch of young no-names to make r...[Read More]

Point Break – Pure Adrenaline Edition

Patrick Swayze and Keanu Reeves star in an original and very entertaining action film from 1991 known as Point Break, now on Blu-ray. I hadn’t seen this movie before it came across my review desk, but Nathan promised me a great film. He was right, and overall this is a very good Blu-ray release that you should consider adding to your library.

Doomsday (Unrated)

Even if you’ve never taken a film class, which I haven’t, you can pretty well see that there really aren’t all that many original movie ideas, or plots, compared to the number of films out there. Just like with games, there isn’t necessarily anything wrong with redoing an idea that’s been done before, if you provide ways to make it somehow more unique. What is bad though is when a film is comprise...[Read More]

21

Kevin Spacey, Laurence Fishburne, Kate Bosworth and Jim Sturgess team up in a story about a team of MIT students who go to Vegas to play Blackjack the smart way – by counting cards to ensure a victory every time. While from what I have read it’s not very true to the real story, this edgy caper movie features some slick acting and some intriguing plot twists that make it quite entertaining.

The Ruins (Unrated)

Is it me or are there more horror movies these days? It could just be that it seems like I get more in for review than in years past. Anyway, The Ruins – Unrated came in on Blu-ray from Paramount this week. It looked somewhat promising, I liked the idea of the large temple and the anticipation of what horror lurked inside. It looked intriguing, but you know how trailers are – they can make just ab...[Read More]

The Scorpion King

Universal has recently released several new Blu-rays, including The Mummy, The Mummy Returns, and The Scorpion King. I hadn’t seen any of these before, but when I got in The Scorpion King I was somewhat excited. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson was a great entertainer as a wrestling superstar, and he’s put out a few decent to good films (The Rundown still being my favorite). Having seen this release now,...[Read More]

The Mummy

Action films are best served on Blu-ray.  A little dusty, but still got some lifeThe first time I saw The Mummy was when it first released in 1999.  I remember thinking how wonderful it was to see Brendan Fraser finally stepping out into some action.  Coming off such goofy films as Encino Man and Blast from the Past, it didn't seem like he was stretching himself out much in his acting career.  You...[Read More]

Drillbit Taylor – Extended Survival Edition

Looking back, high school is quite an experience, no matter how you slice it. While different for everyone, it’s a part of life that nearly everyone can relate to. The film is Drillbit Taylor, which stars the accomplished Owen Wilson alongside three young actors, Troy G...[Read More]
