Bethesda Softworks, who is generally known for hits like the Elder Scrolls series and Fallout 3, has decided to dive into an area they aren’t exactly familiar with, which would be the first-person shooter genre. Led by the Killzone, Call of Duty, Halo and Medal of Honor’s of the world, getting into the FPS genre isn’t exactly the easiest of feats. Need an example? Just ask the folks at Zipper how ...[Read More]
It's been a weekend of Thor for me as I have been playing Thor: God of Thunder on the 360 and watching Thor: Tales of Asgard on Blu-ray. Of course the Thor movie hit theaters on Friday as well and has garnered a surprisingly good amount of critical feedback. But, as most gamers know, no matter how good the theatrical release may or may not be, usually, the videogame tie-in (or cash-in you might say...[Read More]
What happens when Legends of the Hidden Temple is filmed in a rave club? Apparently good games are made! This Xbox LIVE Arcade platformer published by Ubisoft and developed by Housemarque is a 2D side scroller with plenty of style. And although the game is inherently linear, it embodies what a platform adventure should "feel" like.
The fate of fighting game of the year will be decided as it should be... This highly anticipated release from publisher Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and developer NetherRealm Studios is a "reboot" of the classic series. And it was able to utilize the "elegance" that fight fans want from their game today while staying true to the MK Universe.
My copy of The Orange Box traded hands like children trade chicken pox. Portal was so smart, so inventive, and so respectful of the player that it was my go-to “you gotta play” whenever a friend joined the current console generation. This anecdote was a microcosm of a repeating epidemic in the gaming community; Portal’s splendor infected everyone it came into contact with. Like The Leg...[Read More]
EA is back this week with the sequel to 2009's Need For Speed: SHIFT. I found the original SHIFT a compelling title due to how it blended a simulation experience with a dash of arcade. SHIFT 2: Unleashed gets that same feel right again for the most part, while also adding in several new gameplay features. Ultimately it once again bridges the gap between a Hot Pursuit or Burnout and Forza or GT5.
When Crysis debuted some years back at the Electronic Entertainment Expo everyone went ga-ga over the sheer visual depth that was achieved. Prior to the sequel hitting there were still some high-end computers that couldn't run that baby. So, color us skeptical when the Crysis 2 was announced for consoles. As most people on the PC would tell you that there isn't a snowball's chance in hell a game ...[Read More]
Over the years Bioware has been widely known as one of the best development houses in the video game industry. When they produce material you can almost guarantee that it's going to be 'gold'. With a resume that includes Knights of the Old Republic, Mass Effect and Dragon Age it's easy to understand why that assumption is nearly immediately given when they release a new title. Most recently, Biow...[Read More]
If asked my favorite console, Saturn or PlayStation 2 would make a run for it, but there’s a special place in my heart for Sega’s final system. This space won’t be used to speculate on the reasons for its demise, but rather to celebrate the awesome library of games released over the Dreamcast’s short life. Shenmue, Seaman, Virtual On: Oratorio Tangram, NFL2K, Jet Grind Radi...[Read More]
To paraphrase Hot Shots: Part Deux, first person shooters are usually about killing things until they die from it. Doom? Kill stuff. Call of Duty? Shoot dudes in the face. Left 4 Dead? Work together to kill zombies. Semi-relevant objectives give context and bombastic weaponry provides variation, but in the end you’re always John Matrix in the last twenty minutes of Commando. Bulletstorm, the...[Read More]
I think Namco has been on a roll lately with third person titles including Enslaved and Majin. I really enjoyed both of those games, so when I heard about Knights Contract, another new IP in the genre, I was excited. The box art left something to be desired (I know that's a moot point, but nevertheless), and as it turns out, the gameplay is both lacking polish in some areas and also suffering from...[Read More]
While many series certainly had their fair share of games in the past, amongst several generation of consoles, there are few games that can brag that any gamer at any time can pick up said game and play it like it was new. Resident Evil? Not as good now on the PSOne. Metal Gear Solid? Not as good now on the PSOne. Marvel vs. Street Fighter? Sweet Jesus it's still good and guess what platform it wa...[Read More]
