The recent flood of adventure games has been one of the more appreciated retro-revivals. While the heyday was undoubtedly conceived through LucasArts stellar mid 90’s offerings, recent titles, like Telltale’s Sam and Max series, have introduced a new generation to a seemingly archaic style of gameplay. While the state of interactive media has evolved considerably since then, the charm ...[Read More]
I've had the good fortune to be able to check out all three NBA titles this year. First, SCEA's NBA 10: The Inside, then 2K Sports' NBA 2K10, and now, the winner of the most improved NBA game of the year, NBA Live 10 from EA Sports. In recent years, the gap between 2K and Live has been considerable, but this year the choice isn't nearly so obvious with a tremendous effort from the Live team. For t...[Read More]
As a long time Need For Speed fan, I had my concerns when I heard the newest iteration of Need For Speed was going sim, rather than sticking with the familiar arcade racing I had come to know and love from the series. To date my favorite NFS is Most Wanted; the thrill of the police chases and the memories I have of working my way through the Black List are still fond today. There are no police cha...[Read More]
Developer Coreplay and publisher Black Inc. teamed up and recently released Ion Assault on Xbox Live Arcade. The Geometry Wars-meets-Asteroid inspired space arcade shooter combines some interesting gameplay features with a frantic and challenging campaign, as well as multiplayer modes. Is this one worth $10? If you're a fan of the genre, yes, but newcomers may want to try something a little easier...[Read More]
Variety meets simplicity...
After a very successful outing last year with NHL 09, developer EA Canada and publisher EA Sports are back with NHL 10. Instead of just providing an updated roster and a few new animations, EA added a lot of compelling new features and managed to not only match the level of NHL 09, but exceed it. Greatest hockey game ever?
The shmup lives on, questionable pricing notwithstanding, in this newest installment in the classic arcade series.
At E3 this year, Patrick Calkins and myself had the chance to tour the private booth of Bethesda. WET was the only game I was able to play at this year's E3 (thanks to some duties taping the show in HD). It was gritty, it was violent and it brought a very good style to a next gen title. What made this experience even better is the only question I remember asking to the developer, which went someth...[Read More]
I wanna take you out to dinner, and then I wanna go back to my apartment and watch Kung Fu. Do you ever watch Kung Fu?
As convenient as DLC can be for both publisher and consumer, there's nothing quite like having the classic box, manual, and disc package. To that end, Atari is offering up three very popular Xbox Live Arcade titles, all from game designer Tetsuya Mizuguchi. The included titles are RezHD, Lumines Live, and Every Extend Extra Extreme (E4), and if that weren't compelling enough, the $20 price point s...[Read More]

Last month I completed a near final build of the PC version of 8monkey Labs' historical, time traveling FPS game, Darkest of Days. Players take the role of Alexander Morris, a soldier who is saved from imminent death by a time agent during Custard's Last Stand, also known as The Battle of the Little Bighorn. This action-centric FPS features a very cool and clever story, interesting characters, and...[Read More]
