Captain Horatio Hornblower, directed by Raoul Walsh and adapted from C.S. Forester’s celebrated novels follows the brilliant but reserved Captain Horatio Hornblower (Gregory Peck) as he sails the Lydia on a perilous voyage around Cape Horn. His secret orders are to deliver arms to the megalomaniacal rebel leader known as “El Supremo.” After capturing the powerful Spanish ship Natividad in a daring night action and turning it over to the rebel, Hornblower learns that Spain has become Britain’s ally. He must now reverse course, recover or destroy the ship, and contend with the presence of Lady Barbara Wellesley (Virginia Mayo), the sister of the future Duke of Wellington, who boards the Lydia seeking passage home. The story continues with further engagements against French forces, tragic personal loss, and a climactic harbor battle that ends in a daring escape the travel behind enemy lines.
C.S. Forester’s Hornblower novels are among the great works of naval historical fiction, and this film remains the most prominent big-screen adaptation of the character. While later television miniseries explored Hornblower’s earlier career in greater detail, the 1951 film captures the character at the height of his command during the Napoleonic era. It remains an important film in the tradition of naval cinema along the lines of other films such as Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, where you don’t have to necessarily be a fan of naval history to become swept up in the thrilling maritime world. Walsh’s production uses authentic period detail, large-scale ship-to-ship action, and the tactical intelligence that defines Hornblower.
Gregory Peck delivers one of his most compelling performances as the complex captain. He conveys Hornblower’s quiet competence, vulnerability, and strict sense of duty. The naval battle sequences are impressively staged for the era, using full-sized ships and practical effects to create exciting, large-scale combat that still holds up. The story itself is interesting and decently paced, balancing action, strategy, romance, and personal stakes in a way that keeps the viewer engaged throughout its nearly two-hour runtime.

Warner Archive’s Blu-ray features a new 2026 1080p High Definition master created from 4K scans of the original nitrate Technicolor negatives. The transfer looks vibrant and detailed, with rich reds, blues, and sea tones that showcase the elaborate ship models and costumes. The image is clean, stable, and a significant upgrade over earlier home-video presentations.
Audio
Audio is presented in DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 mono. Dialogue is clear, and the original sound design, including the roar of cannon fire and the creak of wooden ships, comes through with good presence for a mono track.
