Season 4 of Black Sails, the STARZ hit series, has made its way to BLU-RAY + Digital HD.
The fourth and final season of Black Sails kicks off in action-packed fashion with an epic, cannons-flying, “abandon ship!” battle that immediately puts John Silver’s fate into question. The camera pans from total chaos above sea where pirates can be heard screaming and cannon balls splintering wood, to spectacular underwater shots that felt eerie and almost dream-like. During this scene, among many others throughout the series, I honestly had to remind myself I was watching a television show, because it had all the feels of a major motion picture.
Of course, as a prequel to the famous novel Treasure Island, we should have known that Silver’s story would not end abruptly. Long John Silver and Captain James Flint would unite again as we see their relationship, as well as their individual characters, evolve until the show’s conclusion. I thought Luke Arnold and Toby Stephens displayed phenomenal acting performances throughout season 4, in their respective roles.
Throughout the course of season four we also watched the evolution of Governor Rogers, who transitioned from antagonist to full-blown villain. Without revealing too many spoilers, I have to say – Roger’s killing of “Teach” was one of the most gruesome, difficult to watch deaths I have ever seen on TV. If you came to see shocking, visually-realistic violence, Black Sails season 4 definitely did not disappoint.
As the series moved along and few episodes remained, I probably wasn’t the only one wondering, “How is there anyway they tie all of this together?” However, I have to give props to Black Sails, because they did a great job of concluding this series. While I was surprised at how many characters survived after ALL THAT, I felt like everything made sense in the end, and each character was done their due diligence.
If you’re like me, at age 6 you may or may not have worn an eye patch and hook hand made out of newspaper for Halloween. Nevertheless, whether you are a casual fan, or total pirate nerd, this show was undeniably impressive. Black Sails is a show I would highly recommend to anyone who enjoys high quality, action-packed television with in-depth character development and stunning visuals.
