Twitch announces partnership with Minecraft

SAN FRANCISCO- November 2, 2013- Twitch, the world’s leading video platform and community for gamers, today announced at the sold out MineCon convention a partnership with Mojang to bring broadcasting functionality to Minecraft. The integration of Twitch into the PC and MAC versions of the top selling game enables gamers to easily broadcast directly to their Twitch channels. The Twitch functionality will be live soon.

Developed and published by Mojang, Minecraft launched on May 17, 2009. Since then, it has become the top selling PC sandbox adventure game with more than 13 million units in sales on PC with more than 33 million units in sales across all platforms. It has also been the recipient of several prestigious awards including five Game Developers Choice Awards at the 2011 Game Developers Conference. As a result, MINECON 2013, Mojang’s annual Minecraft convention, has sold out with more than 7,500 attendees eager to see what is next for one of the most creative games of all time and to meet the team responsible for it.

The game’s popularity has also soared on Twitch with an unwavering presence on the site’s Top 20 Games viewed each month. This has been the case since Twitch launched in 2011.

“Minecraft has struck a very powerful chord with the Twitch community,” said Matthew DiPietro, VP of Marketing, Twitch. “Its constantly escalating popularity illustrates that people love to watch video games outside of the headline grabbing eSports titles. Expect a watershed moment for both players and spectators once the ability to easily broadcast gameplay directly to Twitch goes live.”

Since launching in June of 2011, Twitch has become the primary live video platform for the entire video game industry. Video game publishers, developers, media companies, professional gamers, and individual original content creators have all embraced Twitch with the platform’s next major presence being on PlayStation®4 system, Sony Computer Entertainment’s (SCE) next generation computer entertainment system, and Xbox One, the all-in-one gaming and entertainment system from Microsoft Corp.
