It’s a three-disc DVD set that includes Halloween, Christmas and what I can only figure out to be Valentines day themed episodes from the show. Regardless of how you feel about Spongebob Squarepants, kids will absolutely eat up this set. I brought this home and my kids watched the entire thing in a weekend. Sure that might make me one of the most irresponsible parents, but there are actually some quality shows included in this set.
Without further delay, let’s break this set down:
Spongebob Squarepants Halloween: On this DVD you get very popular shows such as ‘Frankendoodle’, ‘Squidward the Unfriendly Ghost’ and ‘Scaredy Pants’. Those are probably the best representative of the holiday on this DVD with ‘Frankendoodle’ leading the charge. If you have never seen ‘Frankendoodle’ it involves an artist losing a pencil that makes its way to Bikini Bottom. Spongebob and Patrick find it and irresponsibly begin to draw random things that come to life, including a warped looking Spongbob that terrorizes the town. It’s creepy, but very appropriate for the Halloween holiday.
Having said that, the other episodes on the disc have nothing to do with Halloween, which is surprising. Episodes like ‘The Secret Box’ and ‘Band Geeks’ have no scare factor whatsoever. It was as if they were thrown in there for filler. While they are entertaining, they really don’t go along with the theme of the set.
Spongebob Squarepants Christmas: The first two episodes on this disc are spot on the Christmas theme. You get one of the best Christmas specials produced by the Spongebob Squarepants group in ‘Christmas, Who?’. Once you hear the song that goes along with it you will be hard-pressed to forget it. The episode after that is ‘Snowball Effect’, which goes along with the first perfectly. Much like Halloween, the rest of the episodes just appear to be randomly placed as filler, which again isn’t the worst thing ever. You get great amounts of fun with ‘As Seen on TV’, ‘Chocolate with Nuts’ and the ever popular ‘Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy IV’. ‘Survival of the Idiots’ could be considered a Christmas themed episode, but it mainly deals with Sandy hibernating, while Spongebob and Patrick are trapped in her dome. There is snow.
It’s a good DVD in the set, though.
To Love a Patty: It took me a while to figure out the holiday on this one, but after a little bit I finally got it. You get a lot of ‘love episodes on this DVD, which includes ‘To Love a Patty’, ‘Le Big Switch’ and ‘The Donut of Shame’. Much like the other two DVDs, you do get some filler, but it’s easier to get away with it when it comes to Valentine’s Day. Good stuff, but not quite as good as the other two discs.
Having said all this, I think the set is going to make kids happy, if you’re looking for an inexpensive gift for the kiddies this Christmas. It’s got 26 episodes in total, and they’re darn good ones at that. There’s plenty to be happy about with this release, especially the $29.99 price ($21.99 on Amazon) tag. So, if you have kids in the household that are easily amused by a sponge and a starfish then look no further than this DVD set. It’s quite good.
