The good news is that they’ve tried their best to put together a combination of old with new. The old boils down to, and only this at the moment, of the setup of XCOM and the ‘research’ element of XCOM. When your character is out in the field he can take pictures of anomalies and send them back for research. The research will spring solutions/weapons on how to defeat the specific invaders.
That’s as far as the game gets with the original, regretfully.
From that point on its a first-person shooter. You chase ‘blobs’ through the suburban streets of Los Angeles in attempt at destroying them before they wipe out citizens. You’re equipped with interesting weapons to take out the blobs. Here’s what we saw in terms of weapons:
– Blob Grenade – Picture a Christmas ornament packed with black oil that ignites on impact. That’s the Blob Grenade.
– Lightning Gun – It electrocutes multiple blobs, in a small area, into a black puddle. It’s pretty interesting to see it occur.
– Shotgun – It takes a lot to kill the blobs with the shotgun, probably around six shots. On the last shot the blobs will bubble and you take out the bubble.
The graphics are on par with high end 360 graphics, but they’re certainly designed to be simple and similar to a 50s era. The enemy effects are good, but the game still needs fine tuning, which it will get.
The battle of the bubbles was most of the demo. Not as exciting as expected, but still interesting. The game is in early development and won’t be out until an unknown date in 2011.
