Impressions – Spec Ops: The Line

Spec Ops: The Line is your typical third-person shooter. If you could picture Gears of War without the giant bodies and giant aliens and put it in Dubai then you basically have Spec Ops: The Line. Believe me, this is a compliment and not a complaint.

While the graphics certainly look gorgeous (plenty of details on the character models and some of the most beautiful sand and environment effects you’ll see in this generation), the real seller of the title is the storyline. It’s the future and it’s based in Dubai. Dubai has been decimated by massive sand storms. People and vandals run rampant and your soldiers are alone on a mission to eliminate a band of rogue soldiers. What helps the story even more is a great cast of voice over folks led by Nolan North (see Uncharted for details).

Some other fine points that are worth mentioning about the game includes:

– The ability to command your troops to certain positions.

– Objects in the environment take damage (saw a headlight on a broken car get damaged in a firefight).

– Multiplayer will be team based and include a coop mode.

– Cool weapons that include a sticky grenade (it’s disgusting when it is attached to the person and they explode)

The game will arrive on the Xbox 360, pc, ps3 in 2011
