The Sarah Silverman Program: Season Two, Volume Two

The Sarah Silverman Program: Season Two, Volume Two

It’s okay to have fun, right?

If American culture has taught us anything it has taught us that being offensive on television is a huge ‘no-no’. With FCC rules in place and a well-established ‘politically correct’ formula intact with most shows, it’s refreshing to see Sarah Silverman and crew breaking all the rules.

The positives of the show….

The simple storylines of the show are probably the strongest point of the series. Sarah and crew have bought into their ludicrous characters so much that they have no problem putting together some of the more outlandish situations. For example, there is an entire episode dedicated to Sarah peeing the bed. She’s going along dreaming of being a mermaid and ends up over a hotspot in the ocean. Of course, that hotspot ends up being her urinating in her sleep, which starts an episode long mystery of how to make it stop. Simply put, this comedy is gross, rude and actually unique to watch on cable television. Is it childish? Most certainly, but it’s still fun to let go to all these rules that we’re taught to go by when we’re watching television.  That’s the beauty and the positive of this show. It’s stupid, but it’s fun.

The negatives….

There are times when the joke goes too far. There is one episode in particular that seems to be out of place and it seems to have found a subject matter that just doesn’t belong on television (at least not yet). She goes on the hunt for Osama Bin Laden and ends up running down two people. Trying to stop herself from the habit of attacking innocent people, Silverman puts on a small play where her two neighbors play the twin towers and a man dressed in black plays an airplane. That episode actually is in poor taste, only because it’s too soon to joke about one of the worst tragedies in America’s history.

As for the features on this DVD, here’s what to expect:

– Animated shorts

– Behind the Scenes

– Commentary

Not a lot of features, but the stuff is good. Warped, but good. The commentary is especially interesting. Again, not a lot, but it’s good.
