Warner Home Video announces six new Blu-ray titles going 3D in November

BURBANK, Calif., September 16, 2010 — Continuing its reputation as a first to market leader and innovator in home entertainment, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group today announced a major retail offering of Blu-ray 3D titles, the most released by any studio this year. Set to make a splash just before the holidays, the entire wave of 3D titles will hit stores November 16 (SRP $44.95 each).

Available at retailers nationwide, the initial slate of Blu-ray 3D titles will span a wide variety of genres from family and nature to action and adventure including, “Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore 3D,” “Clash of the Titans 3D,” “The Polar Express 3D,” “IMAX® Deep Sea 3D,” “IMAX® Under the Sea 3D” and “IMAX® Space Station 3D.” “Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore” 3D is the industry’s first day-and-date 3D release in the theatrical new release window. Furthermore, “Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore” 3D and “Clash of the Titans” 3D will be released as Blu-ray 3D Combo Packs, which will include both the 3D and 2D versions on Blu-ray, a DVD and a Digital Copy of the film. “The Polar Express” 3D and the three IMAX® films will include both the 3D version, which can be enjoyed with new Blu-ray 3D players, and the 2D version which can be enjoyed with both the new Blu-ray 3D players and existing Blu-ray players. Previously released in anaglyph 3D, the Blu-ray 3D release of “The Polar Express” has been upgraded to stereoscopic Full 3D, which delivers full high-definition 1080p resolution to each eye. All Warner Bros. Blu-ray 3D titles will be released in stereoscopic Full HD 3D.

“This is an exciting time in the industry and we are thrilled to be a part of this evolution in home entertainment,” said Dorinda Marticorena, Senior Vice President, Worldwide Marketing and High Definition. “As sales of Blu-ray 3D hardware increase during the holidays, we wanted to ensure that consumers have access to a diverse selection of 3D content, not attached to an exclusive bundle, which will showcase the amazing possibilities of this brilliant new format – and this is just the beginning. Consumers can expect to see more 3D movies and games coming to Home 3D over the next few months.”

Home 3D will take many different forms (Blu-ray 3D players, game consoles, cable and satellite broadcasting, etc.) and Blu-ray 3D is leading the way to the next dimension. Blu-ray 3D is an extension of the Blu-ray Disc™ format that enables the home entertainment industry to bring the full high-definition 3D experience into the living room. Old anaglyph 3D technology used paper glasses with red and blue lenses which filtered out light to produce a low-quality 3D experience. New stereoscopic Full HD 3D content allows every Blu-ray 3D player and Blu-ray 3D to deliver full high-definition 1080p resolution to each eye. Active shutter 3D glasses (battery powered and either bundled with the 3D TV or sold separately) quickly block and unblock each eye in sequence to ensure that each eye only sees the corresponding image being displayed on the 3D TV set. This technology allows for a fully immersive, theater-quality 3D experience at home. Furthermore, Blu-ray 3D players are backwards compatible, so viewers can still watch existing high definition Blu-ray Discs and standard definition DVDs without needing a separate player.

3D playback of a Blu-ray 3D Disc requires 3D capable equipment including a Blu-ray 3D Player (a PS3 firmware upgrade for 3D movie watching is scheduled for October) and fully capable 3D display with compatible 3D glasses. If your equipment requires an HDMI cable, a high speed HDMI cable is necessary for 3D playback. All of the Warner Bros. Blu-ray 3D titles named here will feature an easy to understand graphic on the back of the pack, explaining the 3D ecosystem.
