Yu Yu Hakusho: Eight Finalists

Yu Yu Hakusho: Eight Finalists

Now, Yusuke and the others will spend the better part of the next few years in training under the three demon lords in a battle for supremacy of the Demon World. Kurama becomes Yomi’s advisor, and Hiei has become Mukuro’s tool. I won’t spoil the ending and say who the victor is, but just keep in mind that Yusuke promised Keiko he’d come back in three years!

Presentation

Once again, like the 2-disc sets before it, presentation of these DVDs is kept fairly simple for the sake (I assume) of cramming as many episodes in as possible. They’ve kept to the same stacking of the two discs for space saving convenience—always a plus for avid anime collectors. The menu is simple and plain with unique background music setting the mood of the episodes to follow. I’ve always preferred this simple style of menu because I have to do less searching to find the options I’m wanting, whether it’s the extras or the trailers. Quality of the voice tracks and translation for this two-disc set are as impeccable as they have been with previous volumes. You get a solid bi-lingual track with quality voice acting on both the English and original Japanese dubbing, and no random translated statements that make little to no sense in their given contexts.

Extras

The extras for YYH: Eight Finalists seems to be more of the same as the previous 2-disc sets. You get the textless opening and ending songs, which seems to be a standard of Funimation DVDs and really isn’t very enticing as a treat. You also get the character profiles of the main and supporting cast that appears in these two DVDs. The character profiles can be beneficial in helping someone behind on current events catch up on what’s going on, or help those who haven’t watched Yu Yu Hakusho in awhile refresh their memories on who’s who. Along with these, you also have a decent selection of trailers to view. On disc one there are the trailers for Slayers, Case Closed, Glass Fleet, and the Tsubasa/xxxHolic movie double feature. On disc two you have Z-store, DBZ, Tsubasa, and a trailer for the Galaxy Railways saga boxed set. Now, if you’re like me, you enjoy watching the trailers just as much as the actual DVD contents so it’s good that Funimation always provides a good selection of them in their DVD extras.

Overall

Overall, Yu Yu Hakusho: Eight Finalists is a great end to a great shonen series. It keeps with the fast-paced action with little filler right to the very end. I have to admit, though, that I was disappointed the last set of the series didn’t include more in the way of extras. It felt lacking to end it as if it were just another DVD in my player and I feel the DVD could have been more generous to a fanbase that loyally followed 112 episodes to the very last.
