Presentation
The box art is sufficiently creepy with the silhouette of the main characters casting long shadows on a black, grey and red background. It really sets the tone of the volume. The backgrounds and settings in this series are beautifully done. It is positively breathtaking. Their use of colors not only help set the creepy tones of the series, but paint a beautiful (if not often creepy looking) village. Even the time of day seems to reflect the mood of the scene, with the truly horrific stuff happening just before or at night. The character animations tend to be rather cutesy and sweet looking, which in the end only makes what happens in the series all the much more horrific and creepy. The openings and ending songs are a little off for the type of series it is, but still beautiful to listen to. The opening and ending songs are both soft easy going ballads, though the ending usually throws in a few words at the very end of it to reflect the episode as a whole. The music itself makes great use of tension of subtle sounds to complete the eerie picture. The American and Japanese cast does a fantastic job voicing this anime, conveying just the right amount of emotions at just the right time. The translation is slightly different but not noticeable enough to make a difference If you’ve never watched the series before, this volume can be a bit confusing since it does a decent amount of referencing the series as a whole. However, I had only watched two of the previous volumes and was still able to figure most of it. Even so, I definitely recommend watching all of it before watching this one. Not only will it help you understand this volume better, it’s a great series to watch (from the previous two volumes’ I’ve seen). I must say, Geneon did an absolutely fantastic job putting together everything in this to create what I consider one of the best horror genres Anime ever.
Extras
This is the only area that Geneon seems to lack in. They do have a few previews of Princess Raccoon, Kyo Kara Maoh, and Paradise Kiss, but other than that it’s pretty bare.
Overall, this anime is absolutely amazing. If you enjoy seeing horror genre Anime this is must have in anyone’s collection. This volume can at times be incredibly bloody and violent. No more so than any of the previous volumes. When They Cry Volume 6 isn’t for everyone as there is a lot of blood used in somewhat realistic fashion. However, if you enjoy a truly amazing horror story with proper uses of violence and blood for the story then, by all means watch it and enjoy. This volume specifically does a fantastic job of tying everything up and explaining what it was all for.
