Trials of Fire is a deck building, role playing, and turn based video game with hours of adventure and fun. Before I get into the review I want to put a disclaimer that I have never played a video game in this style before. While I have seen others play these games I never really understood them or the appeal to them. That being said Trials of Fire completely changed my view on this game type. From the clear instructions to the detailed visuals, this game is one to check out.
When I first opened the game, I was immediately transported to an entirely new world. In this post apocalyptic world it is your job to help the survivors and help bring back order. This gameplay was very different than I was used to but it was very easy to figure everything out. While trying to beat the game there are various challenges to complete if you chose to do so. There are various question marks that show up on the map, once you click on the question mark you are met with a situation and choices of how you want to respond. Whether it is moving along, giving a helping hand, or fighting and risking it all. Once you are in a fight you are given a deck of cards with various powers, strengths, and abilities. You have to pick three characters in your team to use to your advantage. The characters I chose consisted of a warrior, hunter, and elementalist. Each character has its own strengths such as combat, defense, long attacks and so forth. Throughout the game you are able to upgrade/ level up items for your characters whether it is armor, weapons, their card decks. This game is all about having a strategy and thinking ahead. In order to win the fight you must keep a close eye to detail and take your time to win the battle.
This game is a point and click game which I preferred for this game style. It made it easy to move and kept the game design more simple letting the actual deck building and strategy be the star of the show. The battles themselves are very engaging, with the use of a hexagonal battle field there are more ways to move and fight the enemies. Furthermore, the nine cards that are in your deck vary in strength so the ones that are not as strong are able to be recycled in order to gain willpower to play those stronger cards. The challenge is using the deck to the best of your advantage so as to not lose stamina and keep your characters in the fight. Once you win the fight you again have resources that will help your characters get stronger and will help fight the more intense battles. Each deck of cards is unique to each character, meaning each card deck will be different depending on the character you are playing. The cards vary from prepare which is a defense card, advance which allows your character to move around the board, and the special cards such as a force missile, focus, or power shot. There are many cards to choose from but those were the cards I found myself using the most. You have to be mindful of not over-tiring your characters as they will run out of stamina but there is a feature to set up a camp ground so you don’t have to wait long to get back into the action.
Trials of Fire is a great game for beginners or veteran of deck building games. The variety of challenges, characters, and cards to choose from allows you to use your brain and strategize while also having fun and completing the challenges.
