The Mole People is a 1956 science fiction horror film. The film is shown in black and white given the year it was released. The Mole People is a relatively short film lasting roughly around an hour and fifteen minutes. The film starts out with Dr. Frank Baxter, who is a professor, discussing the movie and hollow earth theories that the film is based on. The scene switches to two archaeologists, Dr. Roger Bentley and Dr. Jud Bellamin, on a dig in Asia. The archaeologists’ journey led them to discover Sumerian albinos living underground. Dr. Roger Bentley discovers an ancient society, referred to as the Shadow Dynasty, that had been destroyed. This ancient society is filled with a civilization of Sumerian albinos. Mutant humanoid moles are used as slaves to harvest mushrooms. The people have lived underground for so long that they couldn’t handle the bright light coming from the archaeologist’s flashlight. At first the archaeologists are treated like Gods. However, the plot escalated when one of the archaeologists is killed by one of the moles. The archaeologists found their selves in trouble and are sent to the Eye of Ishtar. Natural light had come from the surface and the men survived. The archaeologists then are able to escape the underground society by climbing to the surface.
In my opinion, I didn’t really enjoy this film. Science fiction movies aren’t my favorite. The film was confusing at times and I wasn’t a fan of the black and white. I will note that the topic was interesting, and I have never seen a film quite like this one. If you are into science fiction films, this could be worth watching. I have never seen a film this old, so it was interesting to see how much the film industry has evolved.
