“This season, the world is finally recovering from the deadly virus that devastated the population, but global political unrest remains. Tom Chandler (Eric Dane) has retired and his former crew has scattered, many having risen in the ranks within the Navy, Sasha Cooper (Bridget Regan), Lieutenant Danny Green (Travis Van Winkle), SBS WO-N Wolf Taylor (Bren Foster) and Sergeant Azima Kandi (Jodie Turner Smith) are on a covert mission in Panama. When they are wrongfully blamed for an attack on the Panamanian president, the consequences for the United States are dire. The Nathan James must fight to prevent invasion by Latin America – and the next world war. Season five is The Last Ship at its most epic, upping the ante on action and excitement, but at its core, it underscores the costs of prolonged war and the toll it takes on the heroes who fight it.”

The Last Ship, to me, was always the most probably apocalyptic scenario that would bring about global devastation: a deadly virus killing 80% of the world’s population in a short amount of time. The appeal of the first season was the crew of the Nathan James out at sea, unaffected by the virus, doing everything they can to find a cure and save humanity. Onward to Season 5, a cure has been found, the world saved, multiple times, and the people that are left are trying to ease back into their familiar roles. However, the landscape of the world has changed, and nations that may have not been a threat before can be now. This exploration of that scenario is what I found to be most interesting about this new season. Normally in apocalyptic stories, you don’t get to see the happy ending where the world is saved, government restored, and lives rebuilt, showing us that despite a global pandemic that took our species to the brink of extinction, mankind will revert back to their proclivities for violence and war.

Eric Dane continues to have a commanding presence in the series, with the rest of the cast performing just as well as him. It’s a thrilling and emotion end to a five-year show, and fans should be happy with the outcome.
