Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Splintered Fate was released on PC and consoles in July 2024. I thought Super Evil Megacorp’s TMNT-themed roguelike was content complete, barring some smaller-form balancing and quality of life changes. I was corrected when the Casey Jones & the Junkyard Jam DLC was released several months later, surprising me with a new character and a new area (with appropriate minibosses). I was corrected a second time when the Metalhead character DLC launched in October 2025 alongside a free content update that added an Arcade mode. Fast forward to today…Super Evil Megacorp has surprised me (in all the right ways) with their Alopex DLC and yet another free content update for Splintered Fate. I don’t know how they’re doing it, but they’re succeeding in adding meaningful content to this little roguelike that I’ve grown to love since I first covered it in 2024.

This newest paid DLC character pack features Alopex and 5 additional artifacts to modify future runs. Compared to the previous DLC packs, the Alopex DLC feels slightly weaker only because it features a single character and a small assortment of deeper endgame artifacts. Casey Jones’ DLC features an entirely new biome, new bosses, new enemies, and along with artifacts. Metalhead’s DLC featured the same number of artifacts but the artifacts themselves helped with grinding out additional currency for unlocking upgrades. Alopex’s artifacts feature three that have a significant drawback of slower charging of abilities along with two that amp up the chaos and fun. Buddy the Wrath ended up being my favorite because he made runs feel less lonely when I was playing solo. I’d rather this DLC pivot away from making things difficult and focus more on adding chaos. Splintered Fate shines when its combat is its most frenetic.

Alopex is a relatively niche character in the overall TMNT universe but a main character in the more recent IDW comics. She’s an arctic fox who was romantically involved with Raphael upon her original release in 2012 as part of the IDW era of TMNT comics. She wasn’t a top-of-mind character I was thinking of as a candidate for inclusion here, especially since Krang, Jennika, and Venus have yet to be added to the game. Regardless, her inclusion makes for an interesting and fitting edition for Splintered Fate’s playable cast. I’ve seen a small amount of online criticism of Alopex being uninteresting, too deep of a cut for general players, and/or a lackluster pick in favor of another TMNT character who deserves their time to shine. I vehemently disagree with all of these criticisms. Any addition to Splintered Fate’s roster, any, is a welcome one. TMNT’s allure has waned for far too long and players deserve access to the series’ cast of wild characters, niche as they may be.

How does Alopex play, then? Fast. Fluid. Fun. Very fun. She hits the ninja fox identity exceptionally well given her speed and flurry of attacks, but there’s a slipperiness to her that takes some getting used to. Unlike the clunkiness of Metalhead and the buildup-power-fantasy that is Casey Jones’ attack pattern, I mistook Alopex’s fluidity for inaccuracy during my first few runs. I kept imagining that I wasn’t aiming her basic attacks correctly because they lacked the punchiness of her fellow teammates’ attacks. Her special attack is great for taking down multiple enemies at once but feels less powerful against single-target (mini)boss battles. Regardless, she’s fun to play once I was able to get ahold of her playstyle.

I have loved (and continue to love) playing Splintered Fate when traveling. Even against the fabulousness that is Hades 2, Splintered Fate stands on its own two feet and presents an approachable, nostalgic, yet fun roguelike experience. Every new DLC adds just enough to change up the meta while keeping me hungry for more. Super Evil Megacorp – if you’re reading this, please keep doing what you’re doing with these DLC releases.
