Silicon Valley is latest hit from television giant HBO. The series is a comedy focusing on the struggles of an up-and-coming tech company named “Pied Piper” and its group of creators. The founder of Pied Piper and protagonist of the series is Richard Henderson. Henderson was formally an employee of the fictional tech leader “Hooli”. The CEO of Hooli is Gavin Belson, who serves as the main antagonist. After failing to secure the rights to Pied Piper, Belson makes it his goal to take down Henderson’s company and lessen his company’s competition further. Once Henderson leaves Hooli, he brings in his band of misfit friends to run Pied Piper. The interactions between these strange characters is what leads to the majority of the comedy the show has become well-known for.
Season 3 of Silicon Valley continues the wacky shenanigans that has the show a favorite amongst comedy lovers. This season introduces Jack Barker, who is a favorite of the Pied Piper board to become the new CEO after Henderson was informed he would not retain the title. Jack is introduced as somewhat of a savior to the company and seems like a genuine person that cares about the brand image that Henderson has created for Pied Piper. However, Jack begins to emerge as being too good to be true and makes some questionable calls that sends the original Pied Piper crew into a chaotic spiral. This season proves to be the most difficult so far for Henderson and his crew. Never before have the stakes been higher for the ragtag group. Viewers will leave every episode with a feeling of uncertainty. The fates of the characters are never safe nor can they be easily assumed. Belson continues his quest to end Pied Piper by taking the most extreme measures the show has seen. Even the original members of Pied Piper go through a difficult time trusting each other. Henderson can only trust himself to get back his creation.
While the quality of the show is top-notch, the blu-ray does leave much to be desired. The quality of the sound and video is typical blu-ray high quality, it’s the contents that are barren. The only special features that the blu-ray provides is deleted scenes. While those are always interesting to see, it would have been great to see a behind the scenes look or interviews of the cast and staff would have added to the experience. A show with this much personality should be giving its fans something more than just deleted scenes.
Despite a disappointing amount of content on the blu-ray, Season 3 is the best season of Silicon Valley so far. It has a great blend of comedy, drama, and suspense. The characters have never been more entertaining and relatable than they have been in this latest season. The quality continues to increase and allows Silicon Valley to once again be known as one of the best comedies on television.
