Shonen Onmyouji vol. 6

Shonen Onmyouji vol. 6

A little something for the ladies.

Fans of Shonen Onmyouji might have noticed how very pretty the male shikigami are. Gracing volume six are two prime examples. On the front cover of the first side of the dual jacket is a lovely illustration of Suzaku. Likewise, on the alternate cover is a nice picture of the somewhat stoic Byakko. Both covers feature differing screen shots and have the same DVD synopsis. These two illustrations also make up the art slip included as an insert showing the DVD releases. The DVD menu also uses the same image of Suzaku for its main background to host the basic menu options. Still, eye candy is eye candy, right ladies?

At the bottom of the barrel lies…

…Not very much. I’ve you’ve been accumulating the DVDs for this series up till now, then you’re probably already familiar with the barren expanse that is the extra content. With such extras as DVD credits and cast/staff credits, it leads one to wonder why Geneon bothered at all. Even their typically high-end trailers for Kannazuki no Miko, Kyo Kara Maoh, and Hellsing can’t make up for the lack. Most of the more hardcore anime fans come to expect, at the very least, that the last DVD of a series reward their loyal patronage with juicy otaku goodies. Sadly, no such luck, and the extra features for volume six of Shonen Onmyouji finish dead last in terms of importance.

The tearful victory.

Throughout the series, Shonen Onmyouji has had a strong balance between emotional plot points and interesting, heated fights against demons. Among the current popular shonen series on the market, Shonen Onmyouji outshines all the others because of this rare quality. Volume six has been no exception to this standard as the series ends on a fast-paced climactic battle in which the results will make lumps in many viewers’ throats. It’s a series with enough to draw in all anime fans, old and new, male and female.
