Just when you think it can’t get any more hectic, the Gallagher family is back at it again for season 7 of the hit comedy series, Shameless. This outrageous family is based out of the south side of Chicago and does whatever it takes in order to survive. Throughout the season, the Gallagher’s are faced with the everyday struggle of poverty and making ends meet. Frank, played by William H. Macy, is an addict and con man who goes to extreme lengths to rip off anyone he can, even his own family. After waking up from a coma a month after being dumped into the Chicago River, he realizes that he needs a “new” Gallagher clan to impose his will on. Fiona, played by Emma Rossum, is fed up putting every other Gallagher first in her life and decides to focus on herself and make something for her life. After turning Patsy’s Pies around, she decides to purchase a run down laundry mat, but realizes it might be more than she can handle. Lip, after coming home from rehab, falls into another relationship and awaits his fate from his former college. He continues to struggle with sobriety and eventually winds up in a familiar place after nightlong bender.
Meanwhile, Carl chooses to have a circumcision to prove his love for his new flame. He also strikes a relationship with an unexpected person who wants to see him become more than just another kid in the hood. Debbie becomes a thief in order to support her new baby and begins battling the Department of Child-Family Services in order to keep Frannie. Debbie falls into the web of her out of control, addict mother Monica, in order to get keep her baby. Ian begins having relationship issues after discovering his boyfriend is cheating on him, with an ex-girlfriend. After meeting an interesting person named Trevor, trouble “breaks-out” in his life and is forced to make a life altering choice. And who can forget about Vee and Kev? They begin navigating uncharted territory when their other wife’s, Svetlana, “father,” shows up unannounced and moves in with them. The Gallagher family is as dysfunctional as they come, but continue to keep their viewers emotional invested with their daily struggles.
Throughout the entire series, the Gallagher family experiences hardship after hardship, and this season is no different. The shows executive producer, John Wells, continues to tug at the heartstrings of its loyal fan base to maintain the audience’s attention for all 12 episodes. The cast of Shameless does a great job in portraying the struggles these characters go through as we, the fans, continue cheering for their success all season long. Shameless is extremely bold. By bold I mean it addresses sensitive issues such as poverty, addiction, teen parenting and even the public education system. It’s a captivating, entertaining, emotional roller coaster that makes you feel like you’re apart of the Gallagher family.
As a fan, I loved watching the Gallagher’s progress throughout the season. Just when you think all is going well, BAM, you get an unexpected turn that completely throws you off. I laughed, I was mad, heck, I even had tears in my eyes, (allergies, of course), throughout this season. I’m eager to find out what is in stores for this band of misfits next season.
