Sasami: Magical Girls Club, season 2

Sasami: Magical Girls Club, season 2

I think I feel my teeth rotting…

The entire packaging of Sasami is so cute that you just might throw up a little. Taking an awesome step outside of their usual shell, Funimation has sent this stacked 2-disc set to shelves in a clear box with a dual cover. On the main cover you get a decorative front of all the girls in their adorable glory, and on the back is the series synopsis. The reverse side is a colorful main cover of Sasami and Misao in flight, and the back is the DVD episode lists with a picture of Sasami. The menu pretty much features enough sparkles and color to make Rainbow Brite sick with envy, but it’s simple enough and concise. The dubbing for the show is fairly decent in its Japanese format, but the English voices are subpar. The voice actresses for the entire female cast all sound inappropriate to their characters and sound like they’re being forced to act. Still, there are far worse dubs in the anime world and the cast is passable for casual viewing.

Extra sparkles, please!

For starters, there is no extra content on disc one; everything is piled onto disc two of this set. You get treated to textless versions of the opening and ending songs. You also get the usual horde of Funimation trailers, such as Moon Phase, xxxHolic, Negima, and others. These are usually (but not always) the same trailers they put on a lot of their DVDs that are produced around the same timeframe.

An age-old tradition held strong by the power of cute.

Sasami: Magical Girls Club may be proclaimed a Tenchi Muyo spin-off, but this is only in namesake characters. So, for anyone watching this thinking they’ll get another Tenchi harem fix, you’ll be sadly let down. It can’t even be considered a revamp of Pretty Sammy. But what you will get is a cute and charming magical girl series that deals largely with personal growth and overcoming self-doubts. Also, the stylistic nature of the animation is disgustingly cute, so people with sugar diabetes should take warning when watching this show. But it borrows from all the favorite magical girl clichés from the team of five adorable girls right down to the adorable pet mascot. All it lacks is the goofy-looking monsters. Closet-fans of magical girl shows will delight with season two of this energetic series.
