Same Kind of Different Me is a 2017 American Christian drama film directed by Michael Carney starring Greg Kinnear, Renee Zellweger, and Djimon Hounsou. It is about how Deborah Hall (Zellweger) has a dream telling her to help homeless man Denver Moore (Hounsou) in order to save her marriage with Ron Hall(Kinnear). This movie had a strong moral message about helping your neighbor that was ultimately weakened by some plot point flaws.
The plot focuses on being the best person you can be to anyone know matter where they came from or how they act. This is a good message but the way the movie presented it has some flaws. For example, the entire movie the Hall family take care of Denver Moore but no financial assistance is ever given to him to help him become fiscally stable. Instead they just say kind words and talk to him in person. The Hall family were established art sellers who were extremely wealthy. That’s great they were helping but it seemed disingenuous overall.
Another major flaw in this movie seemed so far fetched that it would never work out in any situation besides this movie. It tries to show how great the Hall family is by letting this poor man into their lives when every sign told them not to Denver Moore was aggressive, rude, and unstable. In a real world situation, he should seek a counselor and get proper treatment. He should not talk to some random lady who had a dream to help out his problems. It seemed that in a lot of this movie, it just worked out perfectly because that made the plot flow well.
The backstory of Denver Moore was interesting and produced very well. It showed that everyone starts out as a good person and sometimes our past can make us troubled. It gave humanity to a type of character that could be perceived as having none in the real world. It supported the theme that everyone has problems, no matter how different they seem people are struggling just like you.
Same Kind or Different Me had a strong heartwarming message. Help others and you yourself will be helped. While a nice thought, certain plot flaws break the reality of this movie. While it is a good idea to help random impoverished people, it might not work out as well for you as it did for the Hall family.
