Roofman (4k Ultra HD + Blu-ray)

Roofman, despite the serious nature of the crimes, tells a lighthearted story about a man who made all the wrong decisions and had to live with the consequences. Channing Tatum shines as Jeffrey Manchester, with a infectious aura about him that is hard not to like. This one is out now on 4k and Blu-ray, and worth checking out.

“Based on an unbelievable true story, Roofman follows Jeffrey Manchester (Channing Tatum), a former Army Ranger and struggling father who turns to robbing McDonald’s restaurants by cutting holes in their roofs, earning him the nickname: Roofman. After escaping prison, he secretly lives inside a Toys “R” Us for six months, surviving undetected while planning his next move. But when he falls for Leigh (Kirsten Dunst), a divorced mom drawn to his undeniable charm, his double life begins to unravel, setting off a compelling and suspenseful game of cat and mouse as his past closes in.”

Derek Cianfrance’s Roofman is a surprisingly lighthearted take on a dark true story, balancing the violent acts committed by its protagonist with genuine warmth, humor, and empathy. Immediately evident is that the film never glorifies Jeffrey Manchester’s crimes. He’s a serial armed robber who terrorized fast-food workers and endangered lives, but it presents him as a deeply flawed, incredibly nice and generous man driven by desperation to provide for his family and find self-worth in a world that kept telling him he wasn’t enough. The story is told from his point of view, so although we don’t get to see the other side of the consequences of his actions on those he possibly traumatized with his actions, we as the audience instead see the thoughtful and generous actions during these ordeals. The film explores real emotions around self-worth, the pressure to be a provider, loneliness, the search for belonging, personal redemption, and the consequences of terrible decisions. It delves into how capitalism and economic struggle can push good people into bad choices, the fragility of family bonds, and the human need for connection and second chances, often with a bittersweet hopefulness.

What the film succeeds at most is providing something truly real: characters who are sometimes almost cringeworthy in how goofy and earnest they act, but that’s exactly what makes them feel authentic. The awkward charm, the small acts of kindness in the midst of all the chaos, the messy humanity; it’s all grounded in a way that makes the story resonate long after the credits roll.

All actors deliver exceptional performances, with Channing Tatum a delight as the goofy, empathetic Jeffrey Manchester. Tatum brings soulful vulnerability, quiet charisma, and restrained warmth to a role, making Manchester’s contradictions feel heartbreakingly human. Kirsten Dunst is fantastic as Leigh, the divorced mom who falls for his charm while navigating her own struggles, delivering emotional depth and quiet strength. Peter Dinklage, Ben Mendelsohn, LaKeith Stanfield, Juno Temple, and the rest of the supporting cast give outstanding work, adding layers of authenticity and nuance to every scene, their chemistry and timing elevate the material throughout.

Video

The 4K UHD release is presented in 2160p Ultra HD 2.39:1 with Dolby Vision HDR (HDR10 compatible). The image is consistently impressive, with vibrant colors in the strip-mall and suburban settings, deep blacks in nighttime scenes, and sharp details in facial textures, period costumes, and toys in the store. Contrast pops in both bright daylight and shadowy interiors, it’s a beautiful transfer that enhances the film’s tone.

Audio

Audio is presented in lossless DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 delivering clear, centered dialogue and immersive surrounds for ambient sounds, subtle score swells, and tense moments. It’s a balanced, engaging mix that complements the film’s emotional beats.

Special Features

This set comes with both the 4k Ultra HD and Blu-ray discs, as well as a Digital Code for the film. There is a wealth of extras included, and although I would’ve enjoyed seeing more information about the true story, and perhaps an interview with the story whom the film was based on, these extras still provide quite a bit of information and entertainment beyond the runtime of the film.
