If Vampires, Witches and Werewolves fighting for family and the ultimate power makes your blood boil, then The Originals is the show for you. The beginning of season 4 picks up 5 years after Marcel, once a friend and son to Klaus, has had him imprisoned and bound by spells after Marcel and his men storm the Mikaelson clan’s compound and rid the family from their home in the previous season. Klaus’s family shows outstanding resilience in order to free Klaus from his chains and spells keeping him under Marcel’s control. After a brief struggle, Marcel “allows” Klaus and his family to leave New Orleans and never return. However, this lasts merely an episode before these rival factions are ordered to team up to defeat the true enemy: the Hollow.
This season is quite complex and shows a wide range of characters and the emotional battles that they are dealing with. While ultimately the goal is to rid the city from the Hollow in order to protect their families and their community, the two most powerful characters are tormented by the Hollow’s power and struggle with their own inner demons. Throughout the season, the characters of the show continue to grow to find out who they truly are through various relationships.
The two main characters, Klaus and Marcel, obviously have a tortured and troublesome past. The two will always be intertwined, but the love/hate relationship that the two seem to display throughout the season is quite complex and sometimes frustrating to follow. At the beginning, they want each other dead, as we find Klaus as Marcel’s prisoner. Then there is a mutual agreement that they can help each other save the children of the community who are possessed by the Hollow’s spirit. Right when you think they can work together, the Hollow pits them against each other and the two main characters are back to square one.
Having the show on disc does allow the opportunity for fans to not have to wait until next week to find out the fates of their favorite characters. It also allows fans to take an inside look at the show, deleted scenes and what their favorite actors have to say about the show and the characters they portray. After the season finale, you can actually watch a comic-con panel where actors interact with fans and give their opinions of the show.
Unfortunately, I don’t believe the show has the viewership nor the originality (no pun intended) to air much longer after this season. While previous seasons have aired 22 full episodes, the fourth season has a mere 13 episodes. Although I’m not an avid watcher of The Originals or its predecessor show, The Vampire Diaries, this season does seem to be a bit rushed in order to fulfill fan needs. However, the show does do a good job keeping the main plot moving forward and the viewer wondering what will happen to their favorite characters.
