“Oakland A’s general manager Billy Beane (Brad Pitt) challenges the system and defies conventional wisdom when his is forced to rebuild his small-market team on a limited budget. Despite opposition from the old guard, the media, fans and their own field manager (Philip Seymour Hoffman), Beane – with the help of a young, number-crunching, Yale-educated economist (Jonah Hill) – develops a roster of misfits and along the way, forever changes the way the game is played.”

Bennett Miller’s Moneyball remains one of the smartest sports dramas in the past 20 years, and its new 15th Anniversary 4K release is a welcome upgrade that lets you appreciate every nuance all over again. It’s a thrilling film about baseball. While not everyone would find the words ‘baseball’ and ‘thrilling’ particularly true depending on your sports tastes, the best thing about this film has always been how accessible it is to people who aren’t fans of the sport, telling the story of how drastically the game changed in a succinct way that any movie-goer would find interesting. It’s a story about innovation, underdogs, and the courage to challenge tradition, told with crackling energy that feels as fresh today as it did in 2011.

The direction from Bennett Miller is one of the highlights of the film, letting the characters and ideas breathe while building quiet tension that explodes in key moments. The mix of filmed sequences intercut with real-life televised events and announcer commentary is flawless. Brad Pitt delivers a very memorable, charismatic and layered performance as Billy Beane, a man haunted by his own playing career, driven by regret, and willing to risk everything on a radical new approach. Jonah Hill is outstanding as the socially awkward numbers genius Peter Brand, earning genuine laughs and real heart. The supporting cast, including Philip Seymour Hoffman as the skeptical manager Art Howe and Robin Wright as Beane’s ex-wife, adds depth and authenticity throughout.

The writing by Aaron Sorkin, adapting Michael Lewis’s book with Steven Zaillian, is razor-sharp, packed with rapid-fire dialogue, and intelligent explanations. It’s Sorkin at his crowd-pleasing best, making complex statistical concepts exciting and human. Moneyball earned six Oscar nominations, when it was released, including Best Picture, Best Actor for Pitt, Best Supporting Actor for Hill, and Best Adapted Screenplay, a well-deserved recognition for its blend of intelligence and emotion.

Video

Sony’s 15th Anniversary 4K release presents the film in 2160p resolution with a 1.85:1 aspect ratio. Director Bennett Miller personally approved the SDR presentation, which looks clean and filmic with strong detail in facial textures, crowded stadiums, and the understated office environments. Colors are natural, contrast is solid, and the image has a pleasing cinematic quality that enhances the grounded realism of the story. It is a bit puzzling why you’d release a 4k film with only SDR, and honestly I’m not sure if I’ve heard it being done before, but apparently it is how the director intends it to be viewed. With the previous Blu-ray release already looking incredible, it will be personal preference to upgrade this if you don’t own it already.

Audio

Audio is delivered in English DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1, providing a balanced and engaging mix. Dialogue remains crisp and centered, the score by Mychael Danna swells effectively during emotional beats, and stadium ambiance fills the surrounds nicely during game sequences. Nothing new when it comes to the audio for this release versus the prior Blu-ray release.
