“Celebrate ten thrilling years of INTERSTELLAR with this deluxe collector’s edition, exclusively featuring THE FUTURE IS NOW, a new featurette looking back at this landmark epic from Oscar winning director Christopher Nolan (OPPENHEIMER). A team of pioneers undertakes the most important mission in human history to discover whether mankind has a future among the stars. Oscar winner Matthew McConaughey stars as the ex-pilot turned farmer who is forced to leave his family and a foundering Earth behind to lead an expedition traveling beyond this galaxy. This limited edition set includes the feature film on both 4k Ultra HD and Blu-ray, a separate disc containing special features, reproductions of five costume patches, five theatrical poster reproductions, and a never-before-seen storyboard sequence from the director’s archives.”
In terms of the history of cinema, a ten-year anniversary seems insignificant when there are classic films celebrating their 50th and older anniversaries left and right, but Interstellar is no insignificant film.
Christopher Nolan has set a benchmark for all sorts of genres he explores, and if I’m pressed to give an answer as to my favorite of his films, I’d have to say this is the one I continuously come back to, one that has aged the best, not only in terms of storytelling, but the way that I view life as I’ve gotten older. While I may have been more enthralled by the science fiction aspect ten years ago, it’s now the story of family that resonates more. This is the power of storytelling, and when you have a story that changes as you do, the breadth of Nolan’s vision becomes even more evident.
This 10th anniversary set doesn’t bring anything new visually or audibly, as this contains the same 4k disc and Blu-ray that have previously been released, so I won’t go into those details save for the fact that if you haven’t seen the film in 4k, then that needs to be remedied. What this set does offer is, which has unfortunately seemed to go by the wayside over the past few years, is a set that actually has new extras. The set contains three discs, the 4k, Blu-ray, then a separate Blu-ray disc that contains the new extras that were prepared for this set. Housed in a ‘not so shelf friendly’ package, it is still a beautiful long slip-cover, revealing a book that opens with a pouch containing the new storyboard booklet of the Miller’s Planet sequence, five folded mini-posters featuring different prints of the theatrical poster, and the digital code. The other side of the book contains a special note from Christopher Nolan, then opens to reveal the disc sleeves. My only issue with this set is the way the discs are housed. The only way to get them out is to firmly grab both sides of the disc to pull them out, as they don’t easily slip out nor have any sort of protection against potential scratches being pulled in and out. Lastly, attached to the back are the reproduction patches from the film, easily the most eye-catching part of the set.
For a single film and at the price point of this collector’s edition, this is going to appeal to those already solidified as fans, and as one myself, I’d say it’s worth it, especially if you enjoy the little extra collectible pieces you get. This one comes out 12/10.
