Directed by Sebastián Lelio, Gloria Bell is a star-studded English remake of 2013 Chilean film Gloria.

Gloria Bell (Julianne Moore), a middle-aged divorcee in Los Angeles, spends most of her nights at dance clubs letting loose. She has two adult children: Anne (Caren Pistorius), a warmhearted yoga instructor, and Peter (Michael Cera), a father that takes care of his daughter while unaware of his wife’s current location. While spending another night dancing, Gloria meets Arnold (John Turturro), a fellow divorcee. The two become close and begin a relationship. Shortly after, Gloria invites Arnold to meet her family at a dinner for Peter’s birthday. While there, Gloria introduces Arnold to her ex-husband Dustin (Brad Garrett) and his new wife Fiona (Jeanne Tripplehorn). Arnold becomes uncomfortable during the party and leaves without anyone noticing, putting a strain on his and Gloria’s relationship. Despite the setbacks she encounters, Gloria continues spending her nights dancing carefree and living her best life.

There’s no shortage of star power in Gloria Bell. Other than the actors previously named, the film also includes Rita Wilson, Sean Astin, and Holland Taylor. The entire cast deserves a standing ovation for their performances, but Julianne Moore does an exceptional job as the title character. There’s nothing incredible or significant about Gloria. There’s not an unusual circumstance that sends her life spiraling out of control. Instead, this film highlights the daily life of a middle-aged divorcee trying live the best she can. Because of her strong performance, I often found myself believing Julianne Moore to be Gloria Bell. Likewise, I really enjoyed John Turturro’s portrayal of Arnold. Moviegoers are quite used to Turturro playing over-the-top characters with dramatic reactions and frequent screaming, but playing USMC veteran Arnold showcases Turturro’s versatile abilities.

Fans of 70s and 80s dance hits will love the soundtrack. With hits from Laura Branigan, Bonnie Tyler, Air Supply, and other classic stars, there’s no shortage of nostalgia. Let’s be serious, everyone loves a good bit of nostalgia. In fact, during many of the dance club scenes, there’s a 70s disco feel to the clubs Gloria frequents.

What makes this film remarkable is anyone that sees it most likely knows a Gloria Bell in real life. Personally, Gloria reminds me of one of my mother’s friends. I believe many people would associate Gloria Bell with someone in their life, or at the very least someone they’ve encountered. With plenty of drama and laughs, Gloria Bell Is definitely worth checking out!
