In this second collection, Ghost Hunt really ramps up the paranormal violence for more thrills and chills than ever. No more Mr. Nice Ghost in these episodes. The story arcs are longer, and the ghosts are (obviously) angrier, to the point that later episodes actually have body counts! Join “Naru” Shibuya, Mai, Lin, and all the other irregular consultants to take on the next level of undead baddies.
Three story arcs can be found in this collection, and I’m really grateful that this show was made available as a set (rather than individual discs) because the arcs run four episodes apiece. What, you may ask, are we facing in this round?
Ep 14-17: Forbidden Pastime
Since the suicide of a student, all the other kids from his high school have all used the fortune telling ouiji-board game that’s been circulating. As the paranormal phenomena at the school ramps up and becomes more violent, SPR must quickly discover the true purpose behind whoever circulated the game’s popularity before more student are injured, or before someone is killed…
Ep 18-22: The Bloodstained Labyrinth
When several paranormal research companies are hired to investigate strange disappearances in a legendary haunted house (akin to the Winchester Mansion in the U.S.), suspicious activity from the competing organizations are the least of our worries as some of the investigators start disappearing. When Mai’s prophetic dreams get more horrific, can they solve the mystery in time to save Masuko’s life?
Ep 23-26: The Cursed House
When a family that has been experiencing strange possessions contacts the SPR for help, they go to investigate in the hopes of removing the curse placed on the house by an ancient grudge before it’s too late. As one family member after another is afflicted by this strange possession, it finally passes to Naru. What can the others do to save him before it’s too late, and what is causing this terrible curse in the first place?
As usual, I love the paranormal angle taken by this series, and was surprised to see they included a new character this late in the series. The words “The Complete Series” sadden me, though, as this is truly an anime to own and savor anytime you want a quick hit of animated creepiness. With luck, the anime gods will smile on us once again, and someone will discover 26 more episodes of creepy awesomeness!
