“Continuing the combination of artistry and pulse-pounding action that made the first two seasons instant classics, the third season of Genndy Tartakovsky’s Primal opens with a shocking twist that resurrects Spear in a new form – stripped of memory and humanity – and forces him to roam a brutal, untamed world as a shadow of his former self. As Spear battles savage landscapes and deadly foes, fain echoes of his past begin to stir, leading him toward an emotional and explosive reunion that will test the limits of survival.”
Genndy Tartakovsky’s Primal remains one of the most unique and visceral animated series ever made. Tartakovsky, the visionary creator behind classics like Dexter’s Laboratory, The Powerpuff Girls, Samurai Jack, and Star Wars: Clone Wars, has always pushed the boundaries of animation. With Primal, he created something truly special: a nearly dialogue-free prehistoric epic that relies on raw visuals, sound design, and masterful storytelling to convey deep emotion and brutal action.
Season Three builds beautifully on the foundation of the first two seasons, delivering a powerful continuation of the themes that define the show: survival, loss, redemption, the cycle of violence, and the search for connection in a cruel world. The unbreakable bond between Spear and Fang has always been the heart of the series, but this time we’re following Spear on a journey to try and reconnect with his former life, not only with Spear, but with Mira and their child. This season explores what it means to fight not just for survival, but for the ones you love, even after death.
While Tartakovsky regrets the ending he gave his epic main character, he handles his resurrection in a unique way to give us another enthralling chapter. Tartakovsky takes us on a haunting journey with a zombified, instinct-driven Spear who must slowly rediscover fragments of his humanity. This bold narrative choice gives the season an emotional weight that can be deeply moving, all achieved without words of any kind.
Video
The Blu-ray set presents all ten episodes of Season Three in crisp 1080p High Definition. The animation looks phenomenal, with rich colors, deep blacks, and excellent detail in both the brutal violence and quieter emotional moments. It’s a noticeable step up from streaming compression.
Audio
Audio is delivered in immersive DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1. Tyler Bates and Joanne Higginbottom’s score thunders through the surrounds, while the sound design such as roars, footsteps, and visceral combat, makes every scene hit harder. Even without much dialogue, the mix is incredibly dynamic and atmospheric.

Primal: The Complete Third Season on Blu-ray is another triumph for Genndy Tartakovsky. Even after Spear’s death, the show finds a powerful new direction that deepens its themes of family, redemption, and survival. It’s brutal, beautiful, and emotionally resonant. This has been one of my favorite animated series that I’ve seen, and is a must-own for fans of bold, wordless storytelling.
