Friday the 13th 8 Movie Collection

If you're a die-hard fan of the franchise, there are better options out there, but, if you want to save space and don't want to spend an arm and a leg for the Scream Factory set, this new release contains a few noteworthy upgrades to make it worth the purchase.

“Take a terrifying dip into the 8-Movie Paramount Pictures Friday the 13th Collection, featuring every killer moment – starting in Camp Crystal Lake and ending on the streets of Manhattan. The rampage begins with a group of counselors ignoring a wilderness camp’s “death curse.” Years ago, a young boy named Jason Vorhees drowned, and a series of vicious murders occurred thereafter. One by one they find out how unlucky Friday the 13th can be as they are stalked by a violent killer. The bloodbath continues with each movie – one of the most celebrated horror franchises of all time. This collection contains newly remastered editions of the original theatrical cut of Friday the 13th (1980), Friday the 13th, Part II, Friday the 13th, Part III and Friday the 13th – The Final Chapter.”

Perhaps one of the most iconic horror movie franchises in existence, Friday the 13th made Jason a household name, as one of the most unrelenting killers of the genre. Although the franchise is one of the most iconic, it’s also one of the most confusing franchises due to rights issues. It’s understandable that Paramount sold off the character rights of Jason Vorhees due to a steady decline of the popularity of both the character and the genre, until Scream a few short years later changed everything for horror.

This 8 Movie Collection features Paramount’s licensed rights to the character, excluding the subsequent films after Jason Takes Manhattan. So, why? Why this set you may ask? Paramount has previously released an 8 Movie Collection featuring these exact films, and Scream Factory just recently released a giant box-set featuring every film in the franchise with special licensing from all rights owners, including a wealth of bonus features and new transfers. To me, this makes sense for Paramount to release a good middle-ground set if you don’t want to dish out over a hundred dollars for the Scream Factory set, but still want to take advantage of new transfers and digital copies, which the original Paramount set did not include.

Out of all the material on this set, it boils down to what’s new, and that’s Paramount releasing the newly remastered versions of films 1-4, which are included on the Scream Factory set. Something completely new, however, is the inclusion of the digital copies of all the films in the set. If you’re a casual fan of the series and don’t want to dish out the high price for the Scream Factory set, with limited space to store physical media (because the Scream Factory set is huge) this set with the new remasters and the digital copies may be right up your alley.

Good

  • Mid-range price point for those wanting new transfers and digital codes.

Bad

  • Previous 8-Movie collection a fraction of the price.
  • Scream Factory set contains all the films, including new bonus content.
