Ferdinand

The animation and plot in Ferdinand were fantastic. I did not know what to expect from this movie and was pleasantly surprised. Some scenes involving a lot of dancing animals for a transition between plots was a little trivial but can be understood since it is mainly trying to appeal to children. Ferdinand provides a positive strong moral lesson with a subtle message about animal brutality issues hidden in.

Ferdinand is a loveable kids movie that deals with animal brutality issues in a honest morally-driven way. Based on a children’s book called “The Story of Ferdinand” written by Munro Leaf and illustrated by Robert Lawson, the book was banned by Adolf Hitler and Francisco Franco and loved by Ghandi and Eleanor Roosevelt. Ferdinand is about a bull who rather look at flowers than fight in the ring against a matador. When his father passes away Ferdinand runs away into a adventure filled with danger and finding out your true values.

Ferdinand deals with animal brutality issues in a positive moral lesson that can be enlightening for kids and adults alike. In one scene of the movie, a bull fails to impress the matador during the fight. This bull is then sent to the slaughterhouse to be killed because if he can’t fight then he is deemed useless alive. As I viewed this it really put into perspective how unnecessarily cruel bull fighting is. The overall theme is be yourself no matter what others around you are doing. Ferdinand sticks to his values throughout the movie no matter how bad it got and it worked out favorably for him.

The animation in this movie was extremely pretty. There was many scenes where I found myself not listening to the dialogue but instead focusing on the visually appealing backdrops. The CGI was very fluid. The animation style fit the lighthearted tone of the movie well.

In a lot of scenes in the movie the plot device of using cute animals dancing is used constantly to transition to another scene. Since this is a children’s movie it can be understood why this visually appealing aesthetic would be enjoyable for them but as an adult it just turned out to be distracting after awhile.

Overall the animation and plot were fantastic. I did not know what to expect from this movie and was pleasantly surprised. Some scenes involving a lot of dancing animals for a transition between plots was a little trivial but can be understood since it is mainly trying to appeal to children.
