Do you still put your phone in a ziplock bag when you want to keep it safe from the elements? How’s that working out for you? The fact is while people love water, your phone does not. There is a plethora of choices for waterproofing your iPhone. Most of those are hard cases with a gasket system. There’s nothing wrong with that solution for shallow depths, but the deeper you go, the riskier that is. Plus, if you aren’t careful not to damage the gasket you just sank your phone.
DryCASE uses a different approach. Instead of a water barrier with a gasket, DryCASE uses a vacuum seal. Your phone is put into a pouch and all the air is sucked out. Think of your DryCASE like one of those futuristic space saver bags, but instead of saving space it saves your phone.
Easy As 1, 2, 3
1. Slide your phone into the DryCASE
2. Lock the DryCASE shut
3. Pump out all the air
Presto, you have a phone ready to go SCUBA diving up to 100 feet. If you don’t think that’s a lot, ask any of your SCUBA diving friends, not many people dive more than 100 feet regularly. This is one tough mudder of a case!
The Pros
Given such a great depth rating, you can safely assume that DryCASE will work just about anywhere that you’ll get wet. That means you can take it with you from a rainy football game day to a white water trip down some rapids.
Another great thing about DryCASE is that it’s not as expensive as other waterproof cases. Plus there’s a functional headphone jack so if you’re into extreme water sports and want to blast some tunes, you can do so without compromising your case’s waterproof nature.
The Cons
You do have a big plastic ridge which is unsightly and a little annoying. Sure you can strap on your buoyant neoprene band and ignore it, but this case does add some unwanted girth to your device.
You also sacrifice a little in terms of physical protection. This isn’t a hard plastic cover so rips, tears, and drops are all a risk you take. This is the trade off for superior waterproof protection. There is zero access to your power port, this is a case designed to be used at special times and not every day.
The Final Verdict
This is the second waterproof case I’ve used for my iPhone. Between the two, I do prefer my DryCASE. While it’s a little bulkier and it may not provide drop protection, when I’m in the water I care about keeping my phone dry more than I care about anything else. The 100 feet dryness protection is awesome, and the case looks like something a surfer or a SCUBA diver would use. Am I confident enough to take it on my next dive? No. But I doubt AT&T would have service 50 feet below the surface and a mile off the coast anyway.
