Daddy’s Home 2 starts out strong but loses its steam by the end of the movie. Daddy’s home 2 is a family christmas comedy directed by Sean Anders. It stars Will Ferrell, Mark Wahlberg, Mel Gibson, John Lithgow, John Cena, and Linda Cardellini. The premise of the movie is Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell’s dads come into town for Christmas. Hilarity ensues as the family tries to survive each other’s company during the holiday.
Daddy’s Home 2 honestly had some quality jokes throughout the movie. There was times where I found myself laughing so hard over the silliest things. Unfortunately, between these quality jokes was very poorly written filler. These jokes came off as generic and unoriginal. There was a lot of scenes that seemed like they were just made to take up time for this movie to be considered 90 minutes.
Another negative for this movie is the inclusion of John Cena. That is not to say John Cena’s performance was poor, it wasn’t. His character was introduced so late into the movie it was off putting. His lines were rushed and it became obvious he was only included to be the resolution for the end of the plot. This is a shame because when I saw this movie had John Cena in it, I became excited. This movie did not showcase him well and it’s disappointing.
Honestly, the kid actors were some of the strongest characters with good plot development. The youngest son falling in love was adorable and relatable. It was interesting to see him try to figure out young love and the different spectrums of input he was given by Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell. The daughters also acted very well. This overall was surprising to have strong performances in an Christmas comedy.
John Lithgow and Mel Gibson didn’t add much to the Daddy’s home family chemistry. There was many times where I found the attempts to bamboozle the family dynamic as annoying and found myself wishing Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell would get screen time. This is bad due to the whole premise is about them coming into town, but I felt that the two characters being so different from each other made their eventual friendship seem more forced than it already was.
Daddy’s Home 2 is the type of movie you see on TBS on a Tuesday night and you are like why not, I have nothing else to do. While it has its moments of quality humor, plot filler, stale jokes, and the inclusion of the grandpas really bring this movie down. Daddy’s Home 2 stands on the fine line between being good and bad.
