“Bitter enemies. Warring dojos. New blood. Daniel and Johnny reignite old West Valley rivalries in this follow-up series to the Karate Kid films.”
What started as a nostalgic gamble on YouTube has evolved into one of the best fan-service series of all time, and Cobra Kai: The Complete Series Blu-ray set from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment captures that magic across 13 discs. The series came to fruition when creators Jon Heald, Josh Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg pitched a Karate Kid sequel focusing on Johnny Lawrence’s redemption, landing on YouTube Red (later Premium) for Seasons 1 and 2 in 2018-2019. It was a hit, drawing millions of views with its clever revival of the 80s rivalry between Johnny (William Zabka) and Daniel (Ralph Macchio). YouTube ordered Season 3 but shifted to unscripted content, leading Sony to shop the show, and Netflix acquired it in 2020, releasing the first two seasons and producing Seasons 3-6, turning it into a global phenomenon with over 73 million viewers for Season 3 alone.
The most exciting thing of Cobra Kai is how it brings back characters from all the Karate Kid films, not just Daniel and Johnny, but Chozen (Yuji Okumoto), Kumiko (Tamlyn Tomita), Mike Barnes (Sean Kanan), Terry Silver (Thomas Ian Griffith), creating the ultimate fan-service universe. While fans were disappointed in the absence of one particular The Next Karate Kid actress, it’s absolutely mind-blowing when a character you grew up with shows up in the story. It flips perspectives, explores redemption, and modernizes themes of bullying, mentorship, and rivalry, all while delivering epic karate action. Watching the characters evolve over six seasons is special, blending humor, heart, and high kicks into something truly addictive.

Video
The 13-disc Blu-ray set presents all 65 episodes in 1080p High Definition with a 1.78:1 aspect ratio. The transfer captures the show’s vibrant dojo fights and suburban settings with sharp detail, natural colors, and strong contrast, blacks are deep in nighttime scenes, and action sequences pop without compression artifacts. It’s great to have this on physical, especially given the fact Netflix picked up the series later on and their history with releasing their content on physically. That being said, we won’t get the UHD content of later seasons on these discs, but they still provide solid transfers, ones that won’t rely on subscriptions, internet speeds, or changing licenses to view.
