Clusterpuck 99 is a loveable little party game that would be a blast with a large group of friends. The soundtrack, menu aesthetic, and overall tone fit so well and blend together nicely.
The objective in Clusterpuck 99 is simple. You are a circle and you have to get the puck into the opponents goal. In the various maps offered there will be obstacles and deterrents that will make scoring on the opponent harder. The controls are tight and the movement is fluid. While playing this game, I only had one human opponent to play against. I can definitely see this game being chaotic and exciting with 4+ people.
The map design is very clever. All of the maps are categorized for different play styles. My only issue is that in small maps against the a.i. the puck would get stuck in a corner quite often and the a.i. would just crowd the puck in the corner and stay there. This created a stand still for way to long and didn’t really provide any difficulty to the game just frustration.
There is a arena mode where you can create your own maps. While I was personally not interested in this feature it is nice that they offered it.
There is a challenge mode where you have to do things such as beat the enemy team. When beating a enemy team you unlock new skins which is a nifty addition to encourage people to keep playing.
The soundtrack and menu design fit together perfectly. It gives it a very 80’s retro feel. The music is exciting and poppy while the menu has a very minimalistic vintage style. This game could of been in an arcade in the 80s.
Clusterpuck 99 is a good deal if you are playing with a large group of people. It’s simple enough that anyone can pick up on it. There are a variety of maps to play from. The game seems very polished and is obvious that thought was put into it. The A.I. could be adjusted a little bit to resemble a actual human opponent more. I would not recommend this game if you are playing alone due to this.
