A flawless supplement to a favorite series, this feature further explores some of the relationship between Jimmy Kudo and Rachel that is largely sidestepped in the serialized episodes. When a murder is committed in front of Rachel’s eyes, and a friend dies in her arms, she forgets all her memories of both her past and present, forgetting not only her own name, but everyone she’s ever loved. When it seems that Jimmy Kudo and their date at the amusement park seems to spark some drifting impression, can Conan risk her learning his secret in exchange for regaining her memories of him?
However, the murderer is still on the loose, and intends to eliminate the only witness to his crime rather than wait to see if she ever becomes a threat. As every detective, both private and police-sanctioned, rallies around Rachel’s case and the clues slowly become clear, Conan must examine not only his feelings for Rachel, but consider the value of keeping his identity a secret versus allowing Rachel to forget him altogether. This feature-length movie finally allows a view behind the denied romance between the two main characters, which is long overdue no matter where you are in the series when you watch this film. Finally, we are given a more emotional glimpse into their relationship, and a better idea of the feelings each harbors for the other.
Another relationship explored in this film is that between Rachel and her parents and best friend. Often sidelined in the series, it’s refreshing to finally see that actual emotional ties exist between these often seen and rarely focused-upon characters.
Utilizing the same classic art style as the series, but featuring special themes different from the main series this feature is an excellent addition to any Case Closed collection, though the
