“When a mercenary group takes a lavish wedding hostage, they have no idea what they are in for as the Maid of Honor (Rebel Wilson) is actually a secret agent ready to rain hell-fire upon anyone who would ruin her best friend’s wedding.”
Rebel Wilson has always been a scene-stealer. In supporting roles, whether it’s Pitch Perfect or Bridesmaids, she has impeccable comedic timing that elevates the entire ensemble. The trouble is, when asked to carry a film on her own, the same shtick that works brilliantly in short bursts begins to wear thin. Bride Hard is unfortunately a case where the material can’t quite sustain the weight, leaving a comedy that has a few genuine laughs, but far too much space between them.
The premise feels ripe for over-the-top fun: blending action hijinks with wedding-day absurdities. And while there are flashes of that energy, they’re inconsistent. Some set pieces land, others fall flat, and much of the humor relies on extended gags that don’t hit as hard as they should. Rebel Wilson does her best to hold it all together, and fans who love her style of comedy may still have a good time, but the film never reaches the comedic heights of her supporting work.
That said, if you’re the target audience for Wilson’s brand of humor, you may enjoy Bride Hard more than I did. There are scattered moments that feel sharp and self-aware, and Wilson has a few moments of physical comedy that absolutely work. But without a stronger script or a tighter supporting cast to bounce off of, the film struggles to maintain momentum.
Video
The Blu-ray presentation is solid, with a clean 1080p transfer. Bright colors pop in the wedding décor, and fine detail in costumes and locations holds up well. It’s not a visually demanding film, but the disc presentation is crisp and free of major issues.
Audio
Presented in DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1, the track handles dialogue clearly and gives some life to the action beats scattered throughout the film. Surround activity is limited, but musical cues and crowd scenes have a nice presence.
Special Features
There are no extras included on this disc, nor is there a digital code included.
Bride Hard has moments of humor, but they’re few and far between. Rebel Wilson shines in supporting roles, but this film highlights how difficult it is for her brand of comedy to carry an entire feature. If you’re a die-hard fan of hers and the target audience for her humor, you’ll probably find more to enjoy than I did. For others, it’s a light and forgettable outing that doesn’t quite deliver on its premise.
