“Academy Award winners Robert De Niro (1980, Best Actor, Raging Bull) and Robin Williams (1997, Best Supporting Actor, Good Will Hunting) give the finest performances of their careers in this inspiring, heart-wrenching and true story about a maverick doctor who “awakens” his catatonic patients after decades of darkness.”
35 years after its release, Awakenings isn’t the go-to film when you think about the performances of Robert De Niro and Robin Williams, but it should be. Nominated for three Academy Awards including Best Picture, this heartfelt drama based on Oliver Sacks’ real-life experiences still packs an emotional punch that few films can match. Penny Marshall’s fantastic direction strikes the perfect balance between tenderness and restraint, drawing out the humanity of all the films characters, which is a challenge given the fact most start out catatonic. The true story at its core, about patients trapped in their bodies for decades suddenly experiencing life again, remains profoundly moving, a reminder of how fragile and precious our time really is.
What elevates Awakenings to classic status are the superb acting turns from Robin Williams and Robert De Niro. Williams, in a rare dramatic role, brings quiet vulnerability and warmth to Dr. Sayer, the awkward researcher who finds his own awakening through his patients. De Niro delivers one of his most transformative performances as Leonard Lowe, capturing the joy, frustration, and tragedy of rediscovering the world with heartbreaking authenticity. Their chemistry is electric, supported by a strong ensemble including John Heard, Julie Kavner, and Penelope Ann Miller. The film’s themes of hope, loss, and the human spirit continue to resonate deeply, making it a timeless piece that rewards repeat viewings.
Video
Awakenings arrives in stunning 4k 2160p Ultra High Definition with Dolby Vision HDR, and this new transfer is nothing short of breathtaking. Fine details shine through in facial textures, period costumes, and the hospital sets, with natural film grain preserved for an organic, cinematic look. Colors are rich and lifelike, flesh tones warm and accurate, while the Dolby Vision brings out brilliant contrasts and deep blacks that give the film a fresh, modern depth. If you’ve owned previous releases, this upgrade is a must, as the clarity and vibrancy make it feel like seeing the film for the first time.
Audio
The audio is presented in Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 compatible), along with DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 and 2.0 options. The Atmos track adds immersive height and surround effects that enhance the emotional scenes, from subtle hospital ambiance to the swelling score. Dialogue remains clear and centered, with a nice balance that lets Randy Newman’s poignant music breathe. It’s a solid, engaging mix that complements the drama perfectly. While perfectionists may want to stick with the original mix, getting an Atmos track for a release like this does seem rare, and for me, a pleasant surprise that only heightened the immersion in the story.
