We’ve seen a lot of comic book movies in the last decade, most of which turned out to be pretty bad. One of the favorites out there is Hellboy, released in 2004. Hellboy is a character created by Mike Mignola from Dark Horse comics. The sequel is likely to be out in the next year, and the original Director’s Cut was just released on Blu-ray this month.
Ghost Rider is another in the long string of comic book movies that we’ve seen over the past decade or so. Directed by Mark Johnson (who directed Daredevil), Ghost Rider brings Nicholas Cage, Eva Mendes, Wes Bentley, Sam Elliot, and even Peter Fonda together to tell the tale of the mysterious bounty hunter.
I honestly haven’t seen many ‘mob movies’ like Goodfellas, Reservoir Dogs, or even the Godfather series. I just never had a real interest in such movies and well, just never saw one. When Donnie Brasco came in for review on Blu-ray, I wasn’t sure what to expect. The blurb on the back of the box sounded good, and friends told me it was a great film. They were right.
I remember seeing Curse of the Golden Flower in theaters months ago, and being very impressed with it. It wasn’t as action packed as I thought it would be going in, but as director Zhang Yimou explains in a ‘making of’ featurette, action is only a means to progress the story. That said, Curse isn’t as action packed as Hero or Fearless, which you might expect, but the intense drama of the story is ...[Read More]
Bridge To Terabithia arrived on Blu-ray for review this past week and I have to say I had no idea what to expect. The movie is derived from the novel by Katherine Paterson of the same name and centers around the friendship of two fifth graders. Having watched the movie now, I can understand why the novel is so popular; it’s a great, heartfelt story of friendship and imagination, although it could ...[Read More]
I reviewed the Roving Mars Blu-ray release earlier this week and I’m back it again now with another short documentary video by Warner Brothers and IMAX called Blue Planet. Blue Planet doesn’t stack up in any way to the awesome Planet Earth series we saw earlier this year, but it might be worth a rental if you want a very brief, disjointed view of Earth.
Mel Gibson has proven himself an excellent actor on the big screen over his career, but he has also proven himself to be excellent on the other side of the camera, too. Gibson’s latest work as director/writer/producer has just come to Blu-ray and in a nutshell, it shouldn’t be missed.
Personally, I always thought that The Rock, starring Sean Connery, Nicholas Cage, and Ed Harris, was one of the very best films of the 90s. This action packed, character driven film is full of memorable scenes that put viewers through a roller coaster of emotions. After a long delay, it has arrived on Blu-ray and I was eager to see how it turned out.
I never saw Con Air until just a couple of years ago. It was just one of those films I never got around to seeing, but had an interest in, especially after having seen The Rock. Now the film has been released on Blu-ray but unlike The Rock on Blu-ray, the Con Air release isn't as easy to recommend.
I remember the original Tomb Raider game on the PC back in 1996. It was cool, a real unique and standout game for the time. Since then another half dozen Tomb Raider games have come out, none of them really being as impressive as the first in my opinion, although most recently Legend was quite good. Even more recently, this month actually, Eidos Interactive and Crystal Dynamics teamed up to releas...[Read More]
Tony Hawk’s Downhill Jam just recently came out to the PS2 after spending a few months now on the Nintendo DS and the Nintendo Wii. Downhill Jam takes away the freedom of exploration and sheer openness of previous Tony Hawk titles and instead puts the player in races against other skaters and the clock. What amounts is a Tony Hawk game that’s never been easier to get into, but at the same time is ...[Read More]
God of War is simply one of the greatest games of all time, and a game that is definitely in my personal top ten games, ever. What amazes me is that the sequel, released earlier this year, was not only able to recapture that level of greatness, but expand upon it, and make yet another phenomenal experience. It’s games like this that remind me why I play; a system seller in it’s own right, God of W...[Read More]
