The Terminator is coming to Tom Clancy

Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Breakpoint Terminator Event

My roommates are going to love this!

SAN FRANCISCO — January 28, 2019 — Today, Ubisoft announced a partnership with Studiocanal that will bring the Terminator to Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon® Breakpoint with the release of a free event featuring multiple mission settings, enemies and dialogues inspired from the original 1984 The Terminator movie. The event will be available for all players starting tomorrow 9am UTC on the Xbox One family of devices including the Xbox One X, PlayStation®4 computer entertainment system, Windows PC, UPLAY+, Ubisoft’s subscription service,* and Stadia, the new generation gaming platform from Google.

Entirely playable in solo or co-op, the Terminator Live Event will have players gear up and face an unexpected threat from the future in a new story arc taking place in a new location on Auroa.

Two main narrative missions will be introduced, during which players will have to rescue and partner with Rasa Aldwin, a woman coming from the future, in the hope of stopping the Terminators’ plans. These two missions will be available starting January 29 and February 1, respectively, and will remain in-game once the event ends. In addition, players will be able to face the challenging T-800 cyborgs in daily warfare and interception missions.

Upon completing missions during the live event, January 29 to February 6, players will be rewarded with exclusive items inspired by The Terminator, including the movie’s iconic punk outfit, as well as exclusive new Terminator weapons and vehicles. Besides the rewards granted by completing the event’s missions, players will be able to further customize their Ghosts with two Terminator-inspired packs, allowing players to fully transform into the Terminator or Kyle Reese in-game.

The Terminator Live Event comes as part of Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint’s Episode I, and follows the launch of the first raid in franchise history as well as a series of free updates that brought major improvements to the game. The game will continue to receive regular updates in the coming months, in line with the commitment made in the Moving Forward letter to expand and improve the game based on player feedback.

*Updated on January 29*

After spending time with Breakpoint’s Terminator event during early access, it’s easy to see that the developers at Ubisoft wanted to give players a fun reason to hop back into the game or change how they engage in missions.

Fans who remember Wildlands’ Predator event will know what to expect: a dedication to the tone and atmosphere of the franchise. The hulking steel Terminators make just enough sense on the island of Auroa. Their nearly indestructible frames feel strangely at home with the advanced behemoths and drones that were crafted by Skell Technology.

The first mission that will be available to players during this event is titled “A Storm is Coming.” Players are tasked with looking into a woman, Rasa Aldwin, who claims she is from the future and creating a weapon to fight against “the machines.” Considering the amount of machines on Auroa, some of her claims make sense. At first playing out like a typical Breakpoint mission, “A Storm is Coming” involves infiltrating an enemy base, taking out bad guys silently or loudly, and collecting intel. Upon discovering Rasa, a T-800 bursts onto the scene, full 1984 Terminator nostalgia washing over.

If you don’t die to the T-800 clutching two guns and slowly stalking you, you’ll discover there is no way to defeat the machine. While escaping with Rasa, it’s possible friends and foes may enter the fray and attack the cyborg with no avail. Soon enough, the mission ends and players are given an energy rifle that can cause higher damage to a Terminator’s exposed weakpoints. Once its health has dwindled away, players need to keep firing at the Terminator’s core until it falls.

The live event also has a battle pass-like system where players complete Terminator-related side missions that unlock blueprints and cosmetics related to the franchise. Like other Faction missions in Breakpoint, the Terminator side missions simply ask players to go to a location somewhere in Auroa and defeat the foes or hack computers. Thankfully, the missions we’ve played so far grant enough experience to unlock one rank upon completion. Rather than feeling like a time-sink, the Terminator event is attempting to strike a relaxing chord.

Though we can’t say much about the final mission just yet, it’s nice to see how committed Ubisoft is to making this slice of Breakpoint feel genuine. There’s plenty of room for the team to revisit this template not only with other crossovers, but by continuing the Terminator threads with more of the world and lore inserted into the missions. As one of many steps into the vision for improving the reception of Breakpoint, this is a good sign of things to come.
