LOS ANGELES – Award winning writer/director Terrence Davies (The House of Mirth) brings to life the Scottish literature masterpiece by Lewis Grassic Gibbon, SUNSET SONG. Starring Agnyess Deyn (Clash of The Titans), Peter Mullan (“Top of the Lake”) and Kevin Guthrie (Fantastic Beats and Where to Find Them), the “stirring and gorgeous” (Time Out) adaptation will be available on DVD and Digital HD on August 23 from Magnolia Home Entertainment.
Set in Scotland during the turn of the century and in the shadow of World War I, SUNSET SONG is the coming of age story of Chris Guthrie (Deyn), a young farm girl forced to face a series of personal hardships. Following the death of their mother, Chris’ brother Will (Jack Greenlees – “Penny Dreadful”) runs away to get married, leaving Chris to tend to the family farm and fend for herself against their abusive father, John (Mullan). Believing she finally found happiness, Chris marries Ewan (Guthrie), who enlists in the army to fight in The Great War, once again leaving Chris to tend to the family farm by herself. A tale of steadfast resilience in the face of overwhelming adversity, SUNSET SONG is “a film that demands to be seen” (IndieWire).
SUNSET SONG will be available on DVD on August 23 for the suggested price of $26.98.
Synopsis
SUNSET SONG is Terence Davies’ (The House of Mirth) intimate epic of hope, tragedy and love at the dawning of the Great War. A young woman’s endurance against the hardships of rural Scottish life, based on the novel by Lewis Grassic Gibbon, and told with gritty poetic realism by Britain’s greatest living auteur. The film takes place during the early years of the twentieth century, with the conflicts and choices a young woman experiences reflecting the struggle between tradition and change – a struggle that continues to resonate today. Set in a rural community, SUNSET SONG is driven by the young heroine Chris (Agyness Deyn,
Clash of the Titans) and her intense passion for life, for the unsettling Ewan (Kevin Guthrie, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them) and for the unforgiving land. The First World War reaches out from afar, bringing the modern world to bear on the community in the harshest possible way, yet in a final moment of grace, Chris endures, now a woman of remarkable strength who is able to draw from the ancient land in looking to the future. SUNSET SONG is at once epic in emotional scale and deeply romantic at its core, given power by Davies’ unflinching poetic realism.
